Just got a Ruger Vaquero in 45 Colt and want to know what everybody reloads. I'm up for almost anything to try just for the hell of it.

Any feedback on powder and bullet weight would be appreciated.

Thanks

Kent

Most of my .45 colt shooting is cowboy action shooting with Ruger Blackhawks. I use a 250 gr RCBS rnfp or a 270 gr RNFP (my own home built mold). I started with 7.0 grs. of Unique very accurate, then switched to 5.6 grs. of Hogdon Titegroup not quiet as accurate as unique (plenty accurate for cowboy action) but far more economical ($10 per pound savings). I recently tried IMR trailboss 5.4 grs behind a 230 gr roundnose and got a 5/8", 10 shot group at 20 yard (1 ragged hole, thats no BS). For bear defense and making lots of noise I use a 300 gr RNFP gas checked bullet with either Winchester 296 or Hogdon H110, I will not quote my charge(1375 fps from a 5.5" barrel, 1750 fps from a 20" barrel) as it is signifigantly above anything I have seen published (if you want more info on what this load might be, go Leverguns.com). Hope this helps

.45 Colt

8.5 grains of Unique with a 260 grain Keith style cast bullet. When my Unique runs low I may try Universal Clays as it is reported to be cleaner burning (no big deal) and often produces better accuracy with some guns.

In my blackhawk I like 7.1 of win 231 and *.5 of universal. I am testing some Tight group and seems to be good. For big bullets. Lee 300gr GC I like 17.5 of 2400.

My 5 1/2" Vaqueros shoot a 250gr RNFP cast bullet with 8 gr. Unique @ 830fps., American Select is cleaner burning & 6 gr with same bullet produces same velocoity with good accuracy in either revolver.

I use 6.5 grains of w231 with a 250 grain RNFP lead bullet. This gives good accuracy with my 7.5" barrel Colt Single Action Army.

I have wanted to try some Trail Boss but have been unable to get any. Does any one know where I can get some in the Toronto area?
