Hi folks!

I am about to start reloading .45 Colt. with Trail Boss.
IMR gives a max load of 5.8 gr for a .452, 250gr RNFP bullet.
I will use a I will use .454, 255 gr. RNFP bullet.
I guess that the maximum load will be lower (heavier and wider bullet) but how can i know for sure?

Thanks!

255 gr isn't that big of jump from a 250 gr bullet. My Hornady manual gives a starting load of 4.7 gr and a max load of 5.6 gr of Trail Boss with a 255 gr .452 cast bullet using Hornady brass and WLP primers. Now your bullet is a bit different so you might want to reduce this max a bit. It is a good idea to have more than one reloading manual to cross reference data. What type of gun are you using, if it is a Ruger Blackhawk, or Vaquero I wouldn't worry, if it is a old SAA then you might want to stay on the safe side. Please double check my data in case of error.

If the .454" bullet is a proper fit for your barrel/cyl. the max./min. will be the same. If your bullet is oversized for either barrel/cyl., you will be getting higher pressure, how much higher I can't say. Do yourself a favour and check your cylinder dimensions and bore if you haven't already, just to confirm the .454" measurement.
