Hey guys, without discussing black powder loads with cornmeal filler, shotcards, wadding and what not, what is the most common modern smokeless powder and load for this cartridge?

I'll be shooting it out of a 5.5" Vaquero. I know the loads can go way up for rifle usage.

Also, what's the most popular bullet/boolit that is used?

TIA, Painkillers

Trailboss and 255 lead bullets from Higgenson was my go to.

I liked using the cam pro bullets as well

Vithatori makes a great 45 colt powder as well. Tinstar

I use unique. To be honest haven't tried anything else though . It's what I hand on hand when I started reloading 45 colt it worked so I kept with that.

I haven't loaded a lot of .45 Colt, but generally when dealing with a case that has a lot more capacity than it really needs I like to try Red Dot, as it the lowest density conventional smokeless powder there is.

Trail Boss is of course even fluffier, but that's because they went out of their way to make it that way.

I use red dot and unique , 6gr of red dot and 8gn of unique
recently loaded up a few to try using 6.5gn of bullseye. These might be a little hotter loads so will use them in my henry or 92 and not in an 1873
been using the cam pro 250 gr as they are cheap and work good
trying to find red dot, unique and bullsye powders now is the real challenge lol

Unique was the old stand-by, and Trail Boss was a great modern choice in .45 Colt, but especially at a time like this it's more a matter of cross-referencing the whole list of possible powders from your reloading manuals with whatever you can find actually available in Canada today and running with something that shows up on both lists. And be thankful for it if you do find something!

250 grain RNFP bullit
UNIQUE, can give a large velocity spread depending if the powder is at the primer or tiped down then up.
Titegroup, can be snappey but works well if not down loaded.
HP 38, can give good results with factory duplicate loads.
RED DOT , is a good go to powder, has good volume, decent accuracy, strong velocity, it is my preferred powder.
