I load my No.1-S .45-70 to 2200 FPS with 350 Speer's over H4198... it is a comfortable and effective load. I can get another 125 fps, but it is not terribly comfortable to plink with at that level... fine for hunting.

Norma lists 29,000 psi & 43,500 psi 45-70 load data (no longer lists 58,000 psi found this elsewhere apparently for Ruger No.1). 450M No.1 max pressure also high.

• mainly b/c No.1 1:16 twist more friction vs BLR 1:20 twist
• shoots low corrected by using reticle 2nd ballistic dot ok for close range

More than likely manufacturing tolerances causing the velocity difference.

What is the felt recoil difference? Just out of curiosity?

• put Leupold FX-II 2.5x20mm back on
• 100m zeroed with 405gr CamPro @ 1825 fps mv mild load
• checked 100m POI 400gr Barnes SSP, 400gr AF & 400gr Buster
• AF & Buster ~100 fps faster mv same Re7 powder charge
• leave zero as is ok for short range

So did you start with a Ruger #1S in .45-70 & re-chamber it to .450 Marlin, or did Ruger offer a #1 in .450 Marlin?

Ruger did a run of .450M No.1-S a few years back really like it. Compact lotsa wallop here it is next to my .416 Rigby.

• today tried 2400 & 405gr CamPro in my .450M combo works good in my .458 WM
• Hornady brass / CCI 200 / 1.9cc ~ 25gr 2400 / poly-fil to keep powder against primer
• ***safe in my rifle only***NOT A RECOMMENDATION
• ok accuracy good light charge load for plinking zeroed with Nikon 3-9x
• checked zero with re-attached Leupold 2.5x spot on with 400gr @ ~1900 fps mv
• iron sights set for Hornady 500gr @ 1675 fps mv close range

I had a Marlin MXLR and was using H322 with the Hornady 350RN and getting 2200fps. What a powerhouse.
