Just bought a 450 Marlin BLR strictly for bear defense. What are your thoughts on a round to use? I wonder cast versus jacketed. Thanks-karl

The heaviest, flattest pt, hardcast, Gas Check bullet, your shoulder can stand, 400-500gr., and enough RL-7 to send it to 1800-1900fps, if you really are serious.

450

Maybe I should elaborate, I have a lake cabin in the Coastal Mountain foothills. The bears there are large and can be a bit of a problem. The last thing I want to do is shoot one (I am a hunter) but if the time comes I want to be prepared. I am looking for the best way to be safe in the bush. I have a .444 loaded with hot 280 and 300 gr loads but wanted the removeable magazine offered by Browning. Thanks-Karl

I carry a .450 marlin 1895 while guiding and hiking in BC. the Hornady 350gr FP has been the only round I'll load. I duplicate the factory ammo. 350 @ 2150fps. I trust my life to that rifle. while the BLR isn't my first choice the round is very capeable. I've seen that load penitrate over 4 feet of moose @ 60yrds. it's stoped a few bears intent on doing me harm.

big big fan.
