Recently picked up some Bullet Barn 450gr hardcast bullets that I wish to load for my Marlin guide gun. Would like to see 1600fps, any thoughts?

Suitable powders on hand; RL-7, IMR4227, IMR4895, H4198, IMR4320.

Thanks.

I have only used bullet weights to 420 in the Marlin, 1895 with the 22 inch barrel.
I haven't used the RL7, but of the other powders you mention, I have tried them all, with a scope on the Marlin.
4227 is a pretty fast powder, you likely couldn't safely get 1600 with that heavy bullet, but would be good at lighter loads.
Any of the other three should be OK. 4895 is maybe the best of the three, though 4320 appears to be about the same.
I would prefer either of those to the faster 4198, but probably the next writer will say 4198 is best.
My bottom line for the 45-70 is any medium burning rifle powder is very accurate and suitable in the Marlin.

I get around 1650fps with 40 grains of 4198 and the 405 grain bullet barn bevel base bullets out of my guide gun
But like H4831 mentioned your best bet would be 4895 and imr 3031 is also a great one to try.
I have used 4227 but in lighter loads and nice results.

PS
squirrelnuts have you had a chance to try out the red dragon yet?

I've had good luck with RL-7, but would have to run to the shop to get my load data. About 1800fps, if I recall.

If thats with the 450gr (1800fps) and is safe in a Marlin I would love to see the data on it. I would still reduce and work to it in my own gun, but at least it would establish a work point.

Thanks.

It is with the 450gr Bullet Barn and RL-7. I'll grab the data from the shop tomorrow. Also, I should have actual chrony numbers with the data.

Of the powders you have avail. RL-7 will work well for you, accuracy and performance on game may be hampered by using an alloy that is much too hard for it's intended purpose.

Hey Marcoman, I've posted this before but I've had excellent results with 39.5 grains of H4198 under a 450g Bullet Barn hard cast, Win cases and primers. 1620 fps with a very low velocity spread, +/- 5 fps. Lee sizer/seater and their factory crimp die.

Oh look, a video:
