Good evening
I just picked up 200 new 454 casull brass.
There all hornady but older
They all have large primer pockets.
My hornady and lee books both have small rifle primers.
All my other 454 brass is small primer pockets
Is large rifle primers the right call?
Thanks

I think originally the Casull used large rifle primers. There was a change to small for most brands of factory ammo.

I would prime one with a rifle primer and see if it is under flush. As rifle primers are taller.

Nope, from the start in the 80's, when Freedom was the only source of brass, they were small rifle primers. Winchester started with small in the 90's, then other companies got into the.454 brass business and sub-stituted large primers to accommodate the new non Freedom pistols and rifles in .454. If the large don't work suitably for you, call Freedom and ask if they still have any reducer bushings from large to small primers. I know they used to and still have some from maybe the early 90's that Wayne Baker gave me. Great caliber, got my first in the mid 80's!

NAA brass was originally loaded with Large Pistol primers. At some point it was changed to small rifle, the most likely reason I heard was to add strength to the case head. I avoid any brass using large pistol primers myself. While they are likely fine for most loads I figure there is a reason they switched... It's too bad as I have seen that brass a few times for half or less the price of new Starline.
