Does anyone have a lever gun in this cal. Do you have any experiences you would like to share?

I'll never forget the frosty October morning, when I paddled my birchbark canoe within 45 yards of a 70" bull moose, feeding along the Kenai River. I raised my trusty Model 99C that I had rechambered to 454 Casull, from its original chamebring of 7.82 Warbird. I fired, and the mighty beast collapsed. That is my most pleasant 454 experience

Thanks Tod I allways enjoy your posts :D. Were you able to bypass the herds of Rhino?

'We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold...And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas...'

Hit up camp cook for info on 454 casull rifles. I believe he has a rossi puma 20'' that he uses for bear defence (im not a stalker I just have a good memory...I swear!:D)

Thx. Slimbo finally an answer from someone that's not trying to boost their post count. :)

C'mon there Hunter S. Thompson, lets here the rest...;):D

If you are only looking at velocity the simple answer is "yes you would" somewhere along the lines of 300fps slower for the 45 Colt for every load be it revolver or rifle that you are comparing.

Does the greater velocities of the 454 Casull kill faster than the 45 Colt? Maybe, maybe not but I definately feel better carrying my 454 rifle over my 45 Colt rifle when I am using them for wilderness defense.

As well as you can increase the bullet weight up to 405grs to 420grs in the 454 Casull where I wouldn't load heavier than a 345gr in the 45 Colt.

I posted load data and velocity comparisons in another thread a while ago if I can find the thread I'll post the link.

Here are a few velocities in fps that I get with some of my different 454 Casull loads in my s/s 20" barreled LSI Puma M92.

240gr XTP-Mag 38grs H110 1) 2258 2) 2327 3) 2316

300gr XTP-Mag 30grs H110 1) 1858 2) 1821

300gr Speer Gold Dot 31grs H110 1) 1890 2) 1897

360gr C/P WLNGC’s 27grs Lil-gun 1) 1848 2) 1846 3) 1828

395gr C/P WLNGC’s 24grs Lil-Gun 1) 1647 2) 1642 3) 1650

I went to Beartooth bullets site and used their ballistics calculator.

Here are the results for the Puma rifle.

240gr = 2820 ft-lbs 36 TKO 154 TSP
300gr = 2305 ft-lbs 36 TKO 156 TSP
360gr = 2737 ft-lbs 43 TKO 185 TSP
395gr = 2388 ft-lbs 42 TKO 182 TSP

Foot-Pounds of energy (ft-lbs) eg; 30-06 180gr bullet 2700fps = 2914

Taylor Knock Out Scale (TKO) eg; 30-06 180gr bullet 2700fps = 21

Thornly Stopping Power Scale eg; 30-06 180gr 2700fps = 109

Example of TSP scale
45 Antelope
50 Deer
100 Black Bear (To account for 350- 500 lbs. bear.)
120 Elk, Moose, Kudu, Zebra, Large African Safari Plains Game
150 Lion, Leopard, Grizzly Bear, Brown Bear
250 Hippopotamus , Rhinoceros, Cape Buffalo, Elephant
