How common is .455 colt ammo? I cant seem to find much info on it, maybe one of you ammo gurus can tell me something regarding price/availability, or even compatibility with other cartridges?
Not very common. Found some original ones at a gun show for $5 ea. I load my own and made cases so I could fire it out of my British contract 1911 in .455. As for similar cartridges, not a one, the .455 is a semi-rimmed and a little longer than 45 ACP.
you can get Eley .455 mark II made by Fiocchi for around $50 a box of 50. it's a little shorter case than .455 colt but will work. I believe it can be made from .45 colt but you have to turn the rims. most if not all of the old ammo being sold i understand isof the old balloon head variety and somewhat weak for reloading.
Years ago i got cases from Buffalo Arms who make them from .45 Colt. with the new export laws I don't know if they still export.
OK.. are we talking about the revolver cartridge or the auto pistol cartridge :?: The revolver cartridge is easier to get and usually $1 ea. The auto pistol cartridge is as I mentioned above. Sorry for the confusion. They are 2 different beasts
Cases can be made from 45 Long Colt by trimming the case to length and swaging the rim to proper thickness. Lee makes a reasonably priced reloading set.
