Hello All,

The title kind of says it all. Having a tough time deciding and thought I'd get some input from CGN.

Tossing up between a stock 457 Varmint MTR with its match chamber or a T1x MTR that would immediately go into an XRS chassis.

The build will be specifically for shooting 1-300yds at steel plates with SK Standard Plus or Long Range Match. Planning on getting fairly nerdy about precision rimfire but don't want to drop crazy $$$.

Thanks in advance.

Both are nice rimfire rifles, I have the CZ 457 MTR in .22 and the Tikka T1X in .17HMR. I shoot the CZ way more but that could change If I were to put the T1X in the chassis you're considering. Bolt on the T1X is smoother out of the box. I don't care for the wimpy wire ejector on the Tikka. I have only stretched both rifles out to 200yds on steel.

If you plan to go with with a T1x and leave the factory barrel on and be happy then either rifle will most likely meet all your needs. However, if swapping out the barrel for a aftermarket one then go with the CZ 457 hands down.

If you go with a CZ 457 with upgrading parts and barrel in mind. I've mentioned it in the past, go with the basic Synthetic model for $500 and upgrade from there. Start off with $1000 CZ 457 and upgrade from there then you may as well save up a few more pennies and go straight to a Vudoo. That is what I would if I was to start all over again.

How about the Bergara B14R with the steel barrel? What's holding me back on B14R is the full size magazine. Still liking the small magazine where I can easily carry extras in my pocket.

Love my 457 MDT XRS. Just upgraded to a new Strike Eagle 5-25x sitting on a 30 MOA Rail and 20 MOA shimmed Burris XTR Signature rings. I've got 90 MOA of dial UP plus hold over with CCI SV. Maybe next year I'll swap out for the 419 50 MOA rail. I asked the question and Vortex says it no problem bottoming out their scope for long range setup and storing it that way.

How hard is it to swap out a T1x barrel? Here's a video to watch.

You, sir, are a saint. Thank you for the information, it has been invaluable.

Cheers,

I went with the T1X into a chassis. The trigger with a YoDave spring is great. The factory chamber shoots as well as the CZ’s that post online. Certainly well enough for CRPS, considering the positional challenges. I’m not happy though, I want a 1:12 IBI match chambered barrel. As far as barrel changes, I’m not going to choose a ride because I’m scared of a barrel change with the alternative. So many challenges have fallen over my 35 adult years, I doubt changing the Tikka barrel will crush me.

CZs are good platforms to build off of and "hotrod". What was the first model of rifle to achieve the 1/4" club? ;). Factory barrels of any brand are a toss up. Could be good, could be an Anschütz and a dud. I've put a Remington 597 and a Cooey on the 1/2" challenge list with custom barrels, action type largely comes down to preference, barrel is your accuracy. What action and trigger options do you like? Get the cheapest stock model, fit it with a nice custom barrel, and you've got the best bang for your buck. I say "meh" to the Voodoo. Sure, nicely built rifles, but you can get the same (or better) accuracy for half the cost. You can build a CZ to outshoot the average factory Annie for less than the cost of a new 64 action model (factor in selling stock and barrel to recoup expenses). CZ's have reliable magazine feeding, extraction and ejection. There was a smith who re-fit Annies to accept CZ mags. Whoud'a thunk CZ mags would perform better on Annies than Annie mags themselves? :d

If you intend to compete in BC at the CRPS, BCPRL or other LR rimfire PRS matches, then I would strongly recommend you look into a properly set up 10/22

From 2019, most major LR rimfire PRS matches have been won with a 10/22 in BC. The platform offers some obvious and subtle benefits.

The game is one of compromises but the goal is to maximize time on target.... to help with best shot placement... and to minimize 'working' the equipment.

If you want to chat about setting up a competitive 10/22, send me a pm or email.

Best part, this can be the least expensive route to a fully competitive rifles.

Question, does the 457 MTR keep you in production class for crps?

They allow any T1x except for the UPR and any 457 except for the Varmint, ProVarmint or Precision models.

The link to the rules is on the right hand side under "Additional Info".

The list on the CRPS website in the rules book is not current anymore. They also added the Ruger Precision Rimfire Rifle to the Production class around February this year.

So, there are some good options to consider, depending on whether the shooter plans on going into Open or not.

How is a guy to know what's on the current list?

I don't have experience with the Tikka, but I highly recommend the CZ 457 (even though the action is the only OEM part left on mine... ;) )

You said you may geek out a bit...so here's some stuff I recommend based on my experience in Outlaw PRS:
- Quality FFP scope
- Picatinny or Arca mounted from spigot all the way back to the mag well (allows bipod and bag off small supports like a milk crate)
- Quality bipod you can attach/detach/adjust in seconds
- Strelock pro app (use a rangefinder and current weather when sighting in)
- Variety of bags (I like the ones that can attach to the rail, but everyone has a preference)

Have fun!!
