.458 300gr TSX FN **FIELD UPDATE**

Picked up a couple boxes of.458 300gr TSX FN bullets. Have a bunch of RL-7 that I would like to use up but can't find any data. Anyone played with this combination. I'm loading for a marlin SBL 45-70.

So I found some time to do some experimenting with this combination. I worked up from 45 grains and finished at 50 grains. Everything looks good and it grouped pretty decent. The 50 grain loads shot an inch and three quarters at one hundred yards. That was with a 2.5X leupold scout scope, resting off the hood of my truck. Hopefully I can get some time to shoot off the bench at the range to see how good i can get them.
 
My Hornady manual gives a max load of 52.3gr of RL-7 with 300gr bullets (2000fps) and 49.8gr with 350gr bullets (1900fps) for the Marlin 1895, so you are not pushing things at all with your 50.0gr load.

So I ended up working to 52gr of re-7 and it still grouped great and the brass looks perfect. It sure gives one hell of a boom and without a raised comb on the stock its can get hard on the cheek. Still no recorded velocities yet, the north country has been bloody cold the last month so havent had the motivation to go shoot at paper.
I did get some field results for those who are interested. I took a cow bison in the beginning of November with a single round from approx 125 yards. A quartering shot from the rear. Bullet entered mid neck, through the back of the skull and into the bottom jaw coming to rest just under the skin after punching through the jaw bone itself.
Recovered bullet weigh was 250gr (75% retension) . A few of the pedals broke off butt the bullet held together. Check out the pics
