Took my CZ-550 .458 Lott that David Henry built for me to the range today. :)

500gr Horn IB, Hornady brass, CCI-250 Mag Primers, H335

First string of 5 shots; 78grs H335
2324, 2306, 2348, 2307, 2324 fps MV

Second string 5 shots; 79grs H335
2339, 2336, 2326, 2317, 2320

Shooting with the iron sights off a BenchMaster rest I put 10 shots in about 5". :)

The Hornady manual has max load 79.3grs and estimates 2200 fps for this load. I loved the consistency of the velocity at the 79gr load. I'm thinking I will stay with this. It shot smooth and there was no issue that I could see as far as pressure signs.

So I'm ~100fps over the estimate; would this be a problem?

Well, if you're over the listed velocity, then you're probably over the listed pressure too, unless you're using a much longer barrel than tested. However, that's not necessarily a bad thing - these cartridges have some leeway engineered in so as to function properly in hotter climates they're designed for.

prosper FYI according to the Hornady manual H-335 was their favorite powder in the .458 Lott. It showed excellent velocity, was very consistent and accurate plus they said it was affected very little by temperature.

I looked at all of the sources of info on this caliber; internet sites like www.accuratereloading.com, www.reloadersnest.com, plus manuals. Top velocity I could find was 2250 fps, so I am over by about 80 fps MV. While I believe this is 'safe' in my rifle, I don't think the extra MV is necessary. I intend to try to get a load in the 2200-2250 fps range.

I achieved the 2300 fps with 79 grs so something around 76 grs is probably going to work.

So it's back to the bench. :)

You're not using the WC-735 surplus (like 335) by any chance, are you? I got some unexpectedly high velocities in my 45-70 with this stuff

If it says 335, then that's what it is. 735 is sold in boxes, and is labelled 'wc-735'. It's just a very similar powder

FYI, 76 grs H-335 pushes a 500 gr Hornaby Interbond to 2260 fps MV. :)

I also tried 75 grs and that load was right at 2200 fps MV...

I think I'm going to try a load and split the difference; 75.5 grs just for something to do. :)

Sounds like a keeper there!!!

Yes I am also due to load some 500gr FMJ Hornadys. Gotta start doing some experimenting to see the expansion/penetration into the clay bank at our gun range.

Also need to see if the FMJ bullets shoot to the same velocity.

I chose Hornady bullets because their softpoint and solid are virtually identical in shape/B.C. :)
