458 Mag to 458 Lott?

They would probably need some 'smithing to allow the full length Lott round to function through the action. The basic commercial 98 action is really only long enough for 338 Win Mag (the original short mag, LOL) length rounds. The factories made the actions long enough for H&H length rounds by cutting away metal at the front and rear of the receiver, where the mag box goes. If you go this route, it's better to take the metal from the rear of the receiver only, that way there is no compromise of the locking lug area or the strength of the front receiver ring. Harder to do though, requires a fair bit more monkeying around to get the room that you need. It's how all the factories did it for years however, so certainly doable. Personally, I prefer the 450 Ackley, which lets you use the 458 Lott and the 458 Win Mag in the same chamber if necessary (like 22 short, long, and long rifle). FWIW - dan

If your action and chamber are long enough you can reload you bullets out more to achieve the same results with less smith time. If you use 500gr TSX it is very easy to do. If this won't work then ream away, you can still use win mag in it.
