I have a barrel laying around for a rem 700 in 458 win mag improved and been tossing around the idea of a build. I have never used this cal before and was looking for info regarding the pros and cons of this caliber. Winter is coming and the itch to build something is growing. Anybody have experience with this chambering?

What's a .458 Win Mag Improved? There's not much room for "improvement"?!

Correct - less than 3 grains. I have one:

Headspace on the case mouth, like an automatic pistol?

Possible, with with the wider ruger case, you'd need to put a shoulder on it anyways to make use of all the possible powder capacity... I'd vote for a 35-40* shoulder. Could probably build one on a standard long action and maybe get 458 lott performance...

I don't know about headspacing on the mouth. Never looked into that. Doesn't that require the cases to be very accurately trimmed all the time??

Here's what a Google search produced, for reference.

.460 G&A, .458 Ruger, .458 Lott and .458 Win Mag

".458 WinMag: Pmax = 62366 psi
Overflow Case Capacity: 95.0grs; Usable Case Capacity: 65.4grs
65.1grs H335 = 2096fps, 4879ft-lbs @ 62224 psi – 100% powder burn
.458 Ruger: Pmax = 63004 psi
Overflow Case Capacity: 108.0grs; Usable Case Capacity: 75.1grs
71.6grs H335 = 2168fps, 5216ft-lbs @ 62216 psi – 100% powder burn
.458 Lott: Pmax = 62366 psi
Overflow Case Capacity: 110.0grs; Usable Case Capacity: 78.7grs
74.0grs H335 = 2187fps, 5312ft-lbs @ 62281 psi – 100% powder burn

This seems to be an easy 500gr. 2200 fps round from a 24 in. Bbl."

I'm sure there's a reason it's never done in rifles. In the mouse fart 9x19 reloads I was making, the consequences of a problem weren't very major.

I'm not sure why I'm participating in a .458 thread. I'd have to borrow someone else's shoulder to shoot it on!

Your reactions match my initial reaction. This is why I asked about it. The barrel that I have is stamped (word for word) 458 win mag imp. Or does the imp have another meaning that I am unaware of.
