458 Win Mag Loads

Does anybody have any recommendations or experience for .458 405 grain bullet barn hard cast with trail boss powder for a .458 win mag? Was thinking of around 1600 FPS to keep barrel leading down.

Ye won't have to worry about leading with the Bullet Barn 405's using Trail Boss. I was getting around 1070 fps from my 458's with 21.0 gr of TB. Accuracy was good inside 100 yds and the load be easy on the shoulder. For more velocity, good powders to use are 5744 and IMR 4198.

RL7 would be your best bet, the rest are very slow for a 458win.

Use the data for a 350gr bullet and you are erring on the side of caution.

Yep, I've been using RL7 but supply is short.
I used that 325 FTX/ 66gr of RL7 combo to take a Mule doe through the brush at about 100 yards last fall. It just punched a hole clean thru both sides. She left a blood trail that Stevie Wonder could follow, splurting out of both sides with every step. Surprisingly, VERY little meat damage. The butcher didn't believe me when I pulled a loaded round out of my pocket and showed him what I had used.

A very effective combo, but I think it's overkill. I would have liked to see more energy dumped into my target, as opposed to just a thru and thru. I wouldn't hesitate to use that combo on anything in North America, probably be a great combo on Bison or Grizz or whatever.

This year, I'm planning on going to Jet cast bullets and a more "leisurely" velocity.

I load the 485gr cast to 2000fps but a nice practise speed is 1400-1600. 45-70 bullets are good in the 458wm too.
