Hello all,
Well Ive always been fascinated with big calibers so after lots of research (cost and availability of components) I took the plunge and bought a winchester m70 safari express in 458 win mag recently!!
I hunt with a 338 win mag so im not a total noobie to recoil but I dont want to knock my 150lbs frame back into yesterday the first time I pull the trigger either!!
I have a box of hornady 350 gr.rn, anyone have a reduced load that they have found is a good starting point??
Ive also heard that trail boss is a good powder for loads im looking for, or should I start low with imr 3031 or similar? I do plan onworking up to full house loads in the future.
Thanks to all in advance for their replies!!
Rick

A few points...

Trail boss is going to be a VERY reduced load. Fine if you want to shoot some cast 45-70 bullets out of your rifle for harvesting small game, but probably not good for big game hunting.

If you're used to .338 win mag, I'd suggest just gripping that .458 a bit more tightly, rolling with the recoil, and not worring about reduced loads.

If you still want to go with a reduced load, I'd suggest something like IMR 4831 powder over a magnum primer. It's fairly bulky, and so if you fill your case to about 1/4" below where your seated bullet base will rest, you will definitely have a safe, reduced load, but you'll still have enough power to hunt with at close range.

Look into IMR SR4759. That will put you into a midrange load. 4759 is close to the only thing you need to know for reduced and cast bullet loads in rifle cases. That's what it was made for.
