Anyone ever use 458x1.5 or 2 in the real world? Was it worth building a custom over just trying to down load 458wm?

I helped a buddy put together a 458x2 on a Savage 110 action . It's an accurate and powerful rifle .......... but it's still a rimless , belted 45/70 . He isn't a fan of lever guns and wanted something with the energies of a down loaded 458WM without the weight that most rifles chambered for that cartridge usually tip the scales at . It's a fairly handy unit that hits with authority . It's built like a standard sporter , not classic dangerous game rifle lines . I like my lever action 45/70 , but the rifle he put together is a practical solution if you're a bolt only shooter , it definitely drops game .

I'd buy a used one for the right price, but I can't imagine I'd spend the money to build one. I'm far more likely to just go straight to a 45-70 though.

Don't forget that additional cost benefit of homemade brass for this cartridge. One can cut down any 7mm Rem Mag brass that the once a year moose hunters quite often discard at the rifle range.
RCBS trim die makes it prettier but it is not a must have item.

An amigo of mine had a .458x2 on a Rem 600 action carbine years back that shot well & hit hard..on both ends. I much prefer the 45-70 in lever guns & the 450 Bushmaster in bolt rifles.

The 450 Marlin is a 458x2 with a slightly wider belt. It is a powerful cartridge that will kill anything that walks in North America. Keep your shots within 175 yards.

I had a 458X2" that I rechambered to 458 Win Mag - no custom dies, no need to cut brass and much more flexibility and top end potential. The 458 Win Mag can be loaded way down like the 45-70.

Or...you could get a 92 action in .45 LC and pretty much do the same as a 468x1.5 and everything is readilly available .

I really like 45 LC in strong actions (i.e. "Ruger loads"). I agree it would be pretty close to the 458x1.5, but depending on the OP's application it may or may not be what he wants: Current .452" bullet selection is quite different from .458".

I was thinking a 458wm would be easy to download, but a short action was what i was looking at.

I have the 454 casull that hits hard and is fun to shoot. I’ve never had a 458-2 but many 45/70s. Sometimes you have to scratch an itch no matter the itch no matter the cost or other options.

Long ago I read about the 458x2 and when the 450 Marlin came out I REALLY wanted one because from what I read IT WAS SUPPOSE TO BE THE SAME. I suppose the real world ballistics between the 47-70/ 450 Marlin & 458x2 are so similar they're nearly identical. I bought a 450Marlin (1895M) and FOR ME it's the best bush gun EVER. It carries well, points wonderfully, has taken a small heard of deer & with CAST BULLETS is a CHEAP & ACCURATE shooter. Couldn't be happier.

I have a Ruger No.1-S in .45/70, but have debated many times on making a bolt action
458X2"... but likely will just go with a factory .458 WM or Lott and custom load for what I want to use it for. I did some work with ballistic filler and light loads in my .450 N and .405 Win with good results.
