Just grabbed a couple jugs of this powder today and want to try to load 45 with it. I can follow the Campro Data for 230g RN FCP bullet for 6.8-8.1 but thought I'd ask for suggestions on a load by someone with experience with this combo. Thanks.

6.9 gr and 7.1 gr was too light for reliable function in my 1911A1 with stock springs. 7.3 gr worked 100% for 20 rds. I settled at 7.5gr and have shot a few hundred with no probs so far.

I haven't used hp38 so can't compare, but 7.5 gr of pp was clean.

I am shooting 5g of HP38 in the Ruger 45 now and seems to be a lot of carbon/soot ( is that even the correct term) around the muzzle / spent brass. Maybe more noticeable on the pistol seems as its stainless.

With HP38/W231, if you don't approach full power loads, then it will definitely be dirty. Mine are 5.8 grains of W231 and they are decently clean. Don't worry, 5.8 is well below max in my older manuals - before the era of lawyer reloading.

That does seem like a lot but then again I am a total noobie to reloading. The Campro data states 4.2-5.3 of HP-38 for the 230g RN FCP bullet. I believe I started at the low end of that range but I was getting stove pipes and so I increased to 5g and never had a proplem with cycling the action and only thing I noticed is that it seems a little dirty around the muzzle and the spent brass itself. Loading at 5.8 as you suggest would be past Campro's Max range. As stated I'm new to all this, so how does more powder equate to less dirty? is it because of more pressure so it burns quicker hence cleaner. I'm just trying to learn and understand.

It's been a while ( ranges closed due to Covid ) but I finally got to the range to try this load in my Ruger SR1911 45ACP. Ive used factory Winchester white box 230 gr rounds in this pistol with decent accuracy and also HP38 5gr with Campro 230 gr RN also decent accuracy however the Power Pistol 7.5 gr seemed to have horrible accuracy. Could point of impact suffer that much with Power Pistol. Maybe my imagination but it also seemed to pack a lot bigger punch than the HP38. I know I'm not that great of a shot but this load seemed to be all over the place! What am I doing wrong??? Should I try reducing the load to perhaps 7.2 gr??

While HP38 is a bit sooty, it does not unburnt particles like 700X, Clays or Universal does. I got a buy on 8 lbs of the stuff (HP38) and have been loading 5 grs under 200gr LSWC DRGs; really accurate, and "soft" shooting; this is now my go-to load. Pistol functions flawlessly with this load too.

Carbon smears on the cases usually mean that the pressure is not high enough to completely expand the case and seal it in the chamber resulting in some carbon leaking back on the case. Aside from being a little dirtier it does no harm, however. Some of my most accurate target loads have soot staining on the cases.
