Hi guys,
I was hoping someone could post some load data with velocities/pressures with 200lswc and 230jrn bullets. I have a very old reloading manual (Lyman 1970) and the max loads seem to be kind of low from what I can find on the net.

For example, from my manual:
230 jacketed starting: 3.5grns - 622fps max: 4.6grns - 798fps

Other info I've found on the net states a max at 5.6grns - 898fps

Is my manual being overly cautious or is the above max too hot?

Thanks, Peter.

I have been using Winchester 231 for my 45 ACP loads but here is some data from my books for Bullseye.

I don't know if your old manual is "overly cautious" but a lot could have changed since that was published. Testing meathods, SAAMI limits, bullet design, etc. The Speer manual has a 230 TMJ and also a 230 "GD-HP". Max Bullseye on the TMJ is 5.7 gr. for 840 fps. while on the GD-HP it is 5.0 gr. for 812 fps. Different bullet designs and surface areas.

As always, you should slowly work up your loads. Even when switching from one 230 TMJ brand X to a 230 TMJ brand Y. This can be a bit of a pain with an auto ejecting the cases 10 feet away though!

Speer #13
230 gr. TMJ
Bullseye Start: 5.2 gr. = 779 fps. Max: 5.7 gr. = 840 fps.

Lyman 48th Edition
230 gr. TMJ
Bullseye Start: 3.8 gr. = 662 fps. Max: 5.3 gr. = 878 fps. (17,100 C.U.P.)

Lyman 48th Edition
200 gr. LSWC #452460
Bullseye Start: 3.5 gr. = 645 fps. Max: 5.6 gr. = 869 fps. (15,700 C.U.P.)
200 gr. LSWC #452630 (gas checked)
Bullseye Start: 4.9 gr. = 840 fps. Max: 6.0 gr. = 909 fps. (17,000 C.U.P.)

Why Lyman goes to one max pressure for one load and not the next I don't know! I didn't list any loads for the lead bullets from Speer because they always only show loads for about 800 fps max. "... for target shooting. They are not necessarily at maximum pressure." Dumb. That's not what I want my manual to tell me! I want to know the maximum and I will dial in 800 fps "for target shooting" if I want! But they want you to buy their TMJ bullets not the lead ones.

Hope this helps a bit,

Fudd

I use 4.5 grs Bullseye with a 200 gr LSWC bullet with Fed 150 primers I cast my own bullets using an RCBS mold. Very accuate fun load.
