45ACP lg primers vs small primers

I use both as well, no difference. Just happens that a couple dozen once fired I picked up are small primer. I'd prefer all large just so I wouldn't have to separate the brass but naturally I'm not pitching brass just for the small inconvenience.
 
I switched over to the small primer in 45 ACP a while ago. This way my press is set up
for SP and I don't have to worry about changing it.
I have found no difference in performance at all using SP in the .45ACP. But each to there own.
 
do any of you chronograph your rounds or just plink? you will notice a difference in speeds

also if you use small rifle primers it becomes a bit more consistent if you prefer SP brass
 
I have heard that the case head is stronger on a small primer .45acp case because there is more metal left with the smaller hole in it?

probably irrelevant due to the low pressures of the round, but something to consider.

I use both.

I have chrony'd my reloads.
No measurable difference between rounds loaded with LP as opposed to SP primers..
 
ok dumb question but here goes;
I don't shoot .45, but have considered it. I do 9 and 40, which use a small primer. Now the .45 can have either? Ive never seen a large pistol primer, is it like a rifle primer? requires a tube change etc on my 550? and brass has to be separated first?

Yes the large pistol primer is like a large rifle primer. Until a few years ago, all .45ACP ammo was made using the large primer. That was the primer
that it used when the cartridge was designed back about 1908 ( approx ).
A few years ago Winchester started to make the .45ACP using a small pistol primer as it was easier for them.

If you are reloading, the brass HAS to be separated. Trying to get a large primer into a small primer pocket can
cause the primer to detonate . Not a good thing.
 
Their small pistol primer in 45's are for their Winclean ammo (supposedly less toxic for indoor shooting). The rest of their 45's are made using Large pistol primers. As far as I know they are the only ones who makes 45's with small pistol primers, and their virgin brass all uses large.
