.45acp with Unique

CraigOry, this isn't a flame so don't take it that way. If you don't have a reloading manual, either buy one or go online to the powder manufacturer's site and get the information you need. Not because you aren't welcome to ask here because you are. Some of the answers you will get will be based on emotion and as in your case guesstimates. There will usually be a light of sanity and will give you facts and figures from a manual.
There is no better insurance money that you can spend than to pick up a reloaders manual. They sell cheap at gun shows, if your pennies are pinched. Unique is a fine powder when used under proper conditions for the cartridges it was designed for. It is quite broad spectrum but isn't bulky, so it will leave a lot of air space in a large case.

Only thing to do with unique is start a flash fire!!!!!!
Worst powder I ever used will never ever buy again!!!!!!
not being funny its pure crap as a reloader powder!!!

i guess it varies between reloaders, because I have no issues with this powder. loaded a couple thousand rounds of 9mm and 45acp, using only cast lead bullets. no problems, except when I over charged my 9mm causing the bullets to fly sideways lol

unique

Sorry If I offended some people but my dislike for unique runs so low that I will never ever load anything with it again. My experiance loading may not be a great as some of my critic's but it is the only powder I will never ever use again.

I have used 2-12lb kegs of IMR 4756 loading 45acp
I have used 3-4lb kegs of Clays loading 45acp
I have used 1-8lb kegs of 473 loading 40 cal
I have used 5-12oz containers of AA loading 445
I have used 2-12lb kegs of IMR 4756 loading 45acp
I have used 1-4lb kegs of IMR 4756 loading 40 open
I have used 6-1lb containers of 231 loading 38spl
I have used 1-2lb containers of 800x loading 40 open
I have used 5-1lb containers of 296 loading 357mag
I have used 3-1lb containers of H110 loading 357mag
I have used 3-1lb containers of 2400 loading 44mag
700X , 452, Superfield, SuperTarget, Noble and many others for rifle.

I have loaded for 30 years and the only powder I trully dislike is Unique
I liked Red Dot , Green Dot , Blue Dot,
so its not the manufacturer just this one powder
I keep a good log of powders that I have used and the results that I got and after reviewing it to get these numbers , Still find the only powder dislike is unique

supermag, I see that you haven't tried Accurate No.9, from what I hear it's good for magnum loads. maybe you need 8lbs of it ;) wink wink, tickle tickle
you know where to find me ;)

Clearly you have the experience to know what works for you applications and what doesn't and we all develop preferences and prejudices, but I am interested to know what the basis of your objection is and in what application you used the powder.

come shoot at my indoor range with your unique and you'll see how sooty it REALLY is- i use 231- which is a heck of lot cheaper both in terms of cost as well powder usage- and as well 231 serves my 9mm, and my 44 mag- granted they're 44 special loads, ( warm ones) and i don't end up doing a detail strip just to get all that black gunk out- and you'll make lots of friends calling folks "aimless, ill informed, uneducated , and goofy"- maybe some of us have been at this game 40 years and know a thing or 2

I'm not attacking anyone but I did try w231. I found it to be dirty. More so than the Unique that I also have. I might be wrong but that was my initial take. I have since stayed with Unique

Curiosity, I see you mentioned Nobel powder. Would that be noble # 2 shotgun powder as in equivelent to Unique by weight (as stamped on the cardboard box it came in) If so what was your take on it? I'd like to hear opinions on it as a pistol powder!

Unique

The reason I dislike unique is the varience
in velocities I recorded.
I got over 100 fps varience in 38 spl loads that I measured when working up a load I weighed each powder drop on a digital scale as usual and weighed the cast 158's to minimize varience and get a true reading. understand this is slow and a pain but when I work up a load and find I like its performance, I then load 1000's and shoot that load for a while till one of the components becomes unavailable.

I also tried it in 12 guage and recored over 150 fps in my trap loads from 1125-1245 fps at this point I decided to give away the rest .

Also I have tried AA9 in 44 mag loads and while it makes a reasonable midrange load I prefer more to the maximum loads as I shoot them out of a 44 marlin rifle and a 445 supermag

I might be interested in 8lbs if price is right but still have an unopened 5 LB 2400 and some 4227 & 296

always loooking for deals like to keep at least 3years ahead and on some thing more

As for Noble tried it in 12 guage and was un impressed

I do have a hornady load book downstairs but it didnt list unique for a 200gr cmj bullet but listed it for a 200gr cast lead, but i wasnt aware they used the same data, but now i know. Thanks for all the input guys! my gun does get a little dirty, but on a stainless gun any residue seems to show up no matter what, unless there is a truley super clean powder out there that iam not aware of??.......

not really the same data, but pretty close.
My experience is that in 45acp, 200gr LSWC takes around 0.3gr less powder than the 200gr plateds (YMMV)
Don't go around using the info I provided to blindly load, all I'm saying is that cast will take a bit less. Always work up the load

where can I get some winchester 231? is it that much cheaper?

I pay ~$30-32/lb for unique here in Hamilton (AL Simmons, Lanz, Hummason)

I just found out Hummason sells W231 for $24/Lb. AL Simmons is ~$29/Lb

That's a reasonable price difference to me and might cause me to switch if the Lb of 231 I picked up works as well for me as Unique has...

i just picked up 4lbs of bullseye from TSE for $87. right now, i'll take whatever i can get. powder, in bulk, is hard to find! i would buy a lot more if i could find the stuff.

just remember your TABLES- you need LESS of 231- 6.0 for a 200 grain top end AND ABOUT 5.8 FOR A 230

Interesting, Supermag has loaded .38 Special (likely low pressure loads which is not a great use of Unique), and a 12 gauge load, and then rants load and long that this is a useless powder.
