Does anybody out there know where I can buy .45 Colt and .12 ga blanks?
I'd prefer Black Powder blanks, since it's for a "show" planned for the spring/summer.

You're not likely to find .45 Colt blanks. A theatrical/movie supply house maybe. Won't be BP either. If you can find any blanks at all, they use a special power.
.12 ga should be easy enough. Winchester makes or did make 'popper loads' for dog trials. Be advised that if you're planning on firing them inside, they are very loud and will shoot the foam pellets over a fair distance. They are dangerous inside of 10 yards.
Blanks in general are NOT completely safe to be pointing at people.

"...the quick draw scene for the balloon popping..." I think they use primer powered wax bullets for that.
"...what they would be used for..." They're sometimes used to start yacht races by the clubs that don't have a cannon too.

Don't know about 45s...

LeBaron carries both "popper" blanks and Black Powder blanks for 12 gauge, http: // w w w.lebaron.ca/pdf_fall_07/hunting/win_components.pdf., but the Black Powders are relatively expensive.

LeBaron in Ottawa is at 1512 Merivale Road.

I was involved with the cowboy action demonstration at the Sportsman’s show a couple of years ago. We used primers and a block of wax. They gave a good combination of noise and action. They work best in the revolvers, you really can’t feed them from the magazine of a rifle. We also had a few shotgun shells with the crimps cut off. I can’t remember if we used wax or a wad on those (I didn’t load any)

One thing that I found out from trial and error is that you need to drill out the cartridge to make the primer hole larger. If you don’t it builds up too much pressure and the primer pops out a bit and the cylinder won’t turn.

You might want to look for 5 in 1 shells. They are used by the movie industry and I think that 45 colt is one of the guns they are intended for, but you would have to check. They are basically a 38-40 blank as I recall and because of the low pressure were used in 38-40, 44-40, 45 colt and a couple of other calibers.
