460 SW no fire

Please take a look at the picture. Perhaps it would not be considered a good hit?
I put the 454 beside it to show the difference in the hits. The 454 fired the 460 did not.

Sorry for asking so many questions, still learning.

The 460 is a light primer strike probably due to a harder primer.

What appears to be a hard strike on the fired round is part of the push back on ignition; you cannot compare the two.

Is the light primer strike on a factory round? if not, what are the make of the primers . . . take a picture of the box of primers.

Check all the primers in the box . . . something tells me this is a primer with considerable age with the brass cup.

Go buy another box of primers to compare.

That is definitely a light strike. Did you get around to tightening the screw? Looks like a plain old Winchester primer to me. Not sure what the color has to do with age.

I use CCI LR mag primes and it goes bang every time . I'm using 300 gr XTPMAG though instead of the 240 gr. Put 37.0 gr of H110 under it this seems to be the best load for running in both revolver and ruger #1 this is about the middle of the range for powder with the 300 grn . This probably wont help cuz you'r shooting the 240 grn. The lyman 50th book I have calls for 43.5 to 48.0 gr for the 240 grn. modern reloading book 2nd edition I have specifically calls a load for 240 xtpmag 45.0 to 48.5 of H110. If you want to save on powder get the 300 grn xtp mags or throw more powder in your current load and get some LRMAG primers. I run MAG primers in all my 460 loads weather its for 45colt, 454 or 460 the small rifle magnum primers can be hard to find sometimes though.

PS. if you start pushing them hard in the .454 and the .460 go with the XTPMAG not the regular XTP. for plinking with .45 colt i just buy the cheap campro projectiles. Not much fun with those though might as well buy a .45 acp or 45colt. if your doing that.

S&W design screw up once again.
Early 460 & 500 brass was spec'd for large pistol primers.
Attempting to push either 460 or 500 to 454Casull or 500WE pressures/velocities will result in blanked/blown primers.

Advancements in engineering,S&W brass now has small primer pockets to copy the leade of #### Casull from the 80's of the 454 Casull.

The 454Casull & 500WE can be down loaded,of which can not be accomplished w/ the S&W chamberings w/o alot of fillers.

If one's S&W has a device/brake of any design installed,DO NOT shoot 45Colt projectiles jackets/gas checks may not exit the device as designed.

Hornady manufactured .452" diameter Magnum jacket 240,250,260 & 2 configuration 300gr projectiles in 30 years since I've been shooting the Freedom Arms Mdl 83 454's.

Using plated or thin jacketed (.45 Colt) bullets at .454/.460 pressure can split your forcing cone or worse. I have loaded and shot thousands of the 250 Campro, pushing them pretty hard at 1450fps+/- from a 5" bbl. Use suitable bullets for high pressure loads though. The XTP MAG and Freedom Arms bullets have crazy thick jackets. 0.030" or more. I also like the Barnes Buster, it almost acts like a solid.

I have shot hundreds of 45 colt rounds through my 460 as well as hundreds of cast 300 grain gas checked projectiles in the 454/460. NEVER had an issue and cant ever foresee having one. The gas check stays on the projectile until impact.

OP - Check the hammer strain screw to ensure it is tight. If this is tight give the firing pin & channel a good shot of compressed air or brake clean to ensure there is no debris interfering with the momentum of the firing pin.

Please be extremely careful with this problem. At the Bonnyville range one of our members had misfire problems with his 460 revolver. Unfortunately it discharged his weak hand was forward of the cylinder gap. Thankfully there was a couple also at the range that day. They drove him to hospital and he almost bled out the gas discharge from the cylinder gap cut him right to the bone. He also almost lost his thumb. Happened a few years ago.
Be safe.

If the main spring strain screw is tightened all the way in, you can place a used primer cup over the end of said screw to provide a touch more oomph. I had to do this with my model 18.

Auggie D.

Well thank you everybody for all your help. Turns out that it was the spring strain screw, it was approx 1.5 turns loose. I test fired today and it shoots.
I also took the non fired light strike bullets to the LGS today. They confirmed that I was wrong and they were lightly striked and what I should look out for in the future.

We are back in business.
