So I have this 1950 Tula, sprung firing pin, old style bolt and carrier with the extra lug, 90 degree gas block. According to the Survivor SKS forum, this is what's know as a transition SKS?

The stock ferrule has a good lump of weld on it, and the bayonet is the blade type. This gun is marked as a refurb, but is in excellent condition with zero pitting, and a nice shiny bore with crisp rifling.

Maybe I am misunderstanding, but it seems that this rifle would have had a spike type bayonet originally and a stock ferrule with no cutout or weld. Anyone know if that is correct?

Anyway, I have no intention whatsoever of selling this rifle, but I'm curious as to whether these are actually rare or not. Is it worth anything, or just a run of the mill SKS?

If you google SKS-FILES Forum, click on Unaltered SKS Rifles then Russian SKS. On page 4, I have documented the changes made in 1950 (1950 transitions by jstin2). According to a post on page 1, on November 2nd,1949, the decision to switch to a blade was made and it was given 3 months to switch or before, if spikes were no longer available. As far as I know, there is only one 1950 with a spike documented with pictures. Rifles with a spike bayonet have a different style stock, Stock ferrule is different(smaller and no slot cut out) and bottom pinned. Also to be noted the 50 with spike below has a proper replacement laminate stock.

Note: if anyone has a 50 with spike, Please make a new post with pictures.

With the millions of SKS's out there, you'll never convince me there is such a thing as a rare SKS. Almost like saying "I have a rare Cooey 840".

Jaroslav - read the entire post on sks-files(50 with spike). Yes there was much dispute on my 50 with spike. The receiver was stamped with a defective punch and rest was stamped with E. Proven with pictures. The 717 looks like it was stamped by same person. This will be my last comment about my rifle as this is not what the original post was about. And yes a 50 with 90 degree gas port and blade is rare but can be found. I have had 2 but sold one.

Photos will help a lot.

Does the cover release lever have an eyelet tab, or a solid, flat tab? If solid, flat tab-- is it wide or narrow?

Are there variations in font style on the
stamped parts?

Yes, the dust cover has the eyelet tab instead of the flat tab like on my 51 Tula.

I'll take some pics this evening of all the parts in question.

This picture shows the bolt carrier of my 51 Tula on the left and the 50 Tula on the right.

Here are the bolts. 51 on the left. 50 on the right.

Don't worry, the bolts are not in the hellish condition that this picture seems to portray. The pictures were taken outside in the evening with a very low angle sun. Not flattering at all.

Here is the gas block of the 50

and here's the 51

I have seen a couple early 50's with blade with EБ prefix. On this one the bolt ejector is EPed with EУ, so I would guess rest would be the same. Will find out when zeegler replies.

Correct. Ey prefix.

A few other things to note: The bolt carrier serial is electropenciled, therefore not the original, but a force matched piece. The bolt and extractor are also electropenciled as seen above. The barrel is also a replacement with a factory black Parkerized type finish (not BBQ paint). So clearly this rifle saw a lot of use before it was refurbished. Even the original stock has some repairs to it. I am actually in the process of refinishing the stock because it was a bit scabby when I got it so I refinished it but didn't like how it turned out, so I'm doing it again properly.

In contrast, my 51 has no refurb marks, has all matching stamped serials (except the damn magazine), and original blued finish. No paint!!! The finish on the stock is a little rough, so I may refinish that one too.
