Loaned my Rem. .257 Roberts to a hunter in our deer hunt party who didn't own a rifle. Since the new scope on my Rem. 760 30/06 isn't sighted in and my .35 Whelan seemed like too much rifle, I carred my 1943 Long Branch. Loaded up, put on safety, put sling on shoulder and walked. Got to destination and found safety to be OFF. Unloaded chamber, put on safety and walked. Got to destination and found safety to be OFF. Reloaded chamber, applied half-#### safety. No further problems. Since these rifles were carried on slings all the time in military use, did this ever surface as an issue? Those people who are about to flame me that a rifle should never have chamber loaded until ready to fire, please desist.

When you are moving the safety lever, you should feel it needs a certain strength to move it. In other words, it shouldn't move easily on its own. Is this the case? If it moves too easily, there's a problem that can be easily solved.

Agreed that the safety detent spring sounds way too weak.

I wouldn't rely on the safety of any Enfield type. They just seem too flimsy for any serious reliability, IMO.

When you look at the safeties of other rifles, the Enfield safety is plenty strong.

As for the safety coming off on its own, I had this problem with my Hunting No.4. Try checking the screw holding the piece on, I have found they tend to work lose after a few hundred throws of the safety. A quick fix.
