History channel tonight had a two hour Battle of the Somme program. The brits where all armed with #4's with sword bayonets stuck on the ends in a manor that I couldn't figure out. Quite a good show other than that ;)

Those must have been REAL EARLY production Number 4s, then! ;-D

Oldest I have seen is a 1931 and it was actually marked as a Number 4, marked on the butt socket, same as on an SMLE.

Wonder how they got the bayonets on.... super glue? Nah, it would have to be Gun Tape!

Where's Red Green when you need him?

Don't you know, in 1931, the British discovered time travel. They had recently completed the No.4 rifle, and wanted to test it in battle conditions. They sent the 78th time travelers regiment back to the somme, to test the rifle. Normally, they had a strict policy of no interference, so they would have been covert, but I guess someone saw them and documented their presence. Thus, this video is accurate.

78th Time Travellers' Regiment may be easily confused with the 78th Battalion, CEF, which also was at the Somme and features in some of the roughest motion-picture film of that gawdawful battle.

78 B'n CEF was carrying SMLEs.

Makes it all very confoozing.

Where's the SRD jug?

I saw that too. I imagine there are more No 4's for the motion picture people to get their hands on and most people wouldn't know the difference anyway.

They cut down a No4 bayonet so that the ring on the 1907 would fit on and it appears that they inserted a boss in the gap on the bottom of the front band to match the mounting point in the handle.

Saw a movie some years ago with some really interesting Number 4s in it. It was one of those bloodyawful Brooke Shields affairs, SAHARA or something silly like that. Anyway, the Bad Guys all had Number 4s, but they were stocked-up to look just like Kar 98ks!

I am told that this was an Israeli conversion, which would make a lot of sense, the film being made there rather than in the actual Sahara, which is nowhere even close.

I'd really like one of those to play with.

I saw it too and just had to shake my head. It was a good documentary aside from the no4s. At least the germans weren't using 91/30s ;)
