Are these holsters any good? I am looking for something for a SIG P229R. The model is:

http://www.511tactical.com/index.asp?dept=7&number=59136

You can pick them up for about $30.00 plus shipping, or somewhere around there if any shops were to bring them in. last time I was a Dave's in New Westminster they didn't have anything for a 229R, but they certainly have tons of 5.11 Tactical stuff. If this is a good holster I might just order one. It wil cost about $45.00 to have it shipped to my door. Worth it?

Any other ideas on holsters for a 229R?

What are you wanting to use it for?

Just regular holster shooting at the range. Maybe some competitive shooting.

Does anybody know how the retention works on these. Apparently it "clicks in", but it looks like you just yank it out. No? I should read the website more closely I guess.

I tried an open top Blade Tech on my Smith 5946.

Here's what I liked: Easy access to the pistol and nice smooth draw from the holster. Very simple rig with a nice clean fit.

Here's what I didn't like: The holster didn't retain the pistol to the degree I like. It sat a tad to far out off my hip and kinda flopped around a bit when I ran.

I did, however, try a Blade Tech (inside the waist band) open top holster. It held the pistol much better than the first one I tried and everything sits nice and snug when I'm moving around. Draw is still nice and smooth. I still have this one and use it frequently.

If Dave's gets some stuff in stock, I'd suggest trying the holster on your belt first. That way you'll get an idea how things will work out.

That P229 is one slick pistol. Good choice, its my fav.

The holster retains the gun at the front of the trigger guard..it does click in but allows a smooth draw..it is a level one retention...but that is what i wanted.

The holster is rarely the culprit when it comes to slop and flop. A proper gun belt or pistol belt is required to gain the full support offered in a holster... The gear isn't cheap. Then again, neither is the firearm its carrying.

I got one from Daves surplus for my Sig 226R...I like it.. good adjustable retention, level one..smooth draw...paddle and belt slide included.

+1 to what Wayne said...Except mine is for a G21. I really like it. For the ~$35 dollars it cost it well worth the money...

As a bit of an update - on this incredibly riveting thread - I did get one of these holsters awhile back and have been using it. Seems like a nice piece of kit. I have it on a duty belt with a forward cant.
