Hey guys,

Recently picked up a banana Tapco 5/20 rd mag for my Soviet SKS, and upon installing it, it seems as though the back of the mag sticks up so far into where the bolt goes that it prevents the bolt from closing. I took a picture to give an idea of what I'm talking about, hopefully it's good enough. ----> http://i.imgur.com/0aOuuzx.jpg

Anyone else have this problem? Any fix? Cheers and TIA.

Sorry if I don't fully understand - that doesn't make sense. If I push it down like I normally would with the stock mag, there's nothing that depresses to free the bolt forward.

What I see in your picture is the hold open sticking up in the path of the bolt. Only the tab at the back of the follower should be holding it up. If you push down on the follower, the spring loaded hold open should drop down out of the bolt's path.
If it doesn't, then see what else is getting in the hold open's way.
With the magazine removed, confirm that the hold open moves freely and is spring loaded downward.

Okay guys, so I got home and re-did it, and found I can close the bolt if I push down on the tail on the back of the mag, which is good.

However, some safety concerns I'm having. First off, the mag of course can only be removed or installed when the bolt is open. What I'm finding is that after the tail is pushed down to close the bolt, if I open it again, it will not stay open.

I haven't tried this with live rounds in it yet, but my main concern is what if I have to prove my weapon after a misfire? I can't remove the mag without having the bolt open, and the bolt won't stay open after the tail is pushed down (unless the last bullet is fired).

Will I be able to open the bolt and have it held open on its own if there are bullets in the mag?

Grind those bottom lips off the bolt so you can remove and insert the magazine with the bolt closed.
That way you won't need 3 hands to safe your firearm upon a cease fire call with rounds still in the mag.

I wouldn't do it to a perfect museum piece.
I've racked my brain trying to figure out Simonov's rationale for it, but having to drop the trigger mechanism in order to remove the fixed mag just takes away the only excuse I could've imagined for those bolt lips.
T!ts on a bull, and Tapco's worst enemy. The bolt lip removal is a required part of the Hical and Magwedge AR mag adapter option, which I've also done both of.

Yeah, thinking about it that's the only reason I can think they're there. I'm sure mine isn't anywhere near a relic, it's just your regular old 1953 Tula. Although everything has its serial on it.

Regardless, I'll probably give it a go. Appreciate the advice my friend - I guess I'll be sticking around this community a while. :)
