Hello,

Just wondering if anyone could recommend some match grade ammo for my AR?

Picked up my first AR (Colt -A4) about a year ago, and have been using cheaper commercial stuff (PMC Bronze, American Eagle, etc). After shooting mostly milsurps, I am really amazed at the accuracy, and would like to see what I can do with some higher end ammo.

Unfortunately I am not set up at this time to do my own reloading, so am hoping to find a good commercial option in the meantime.

The rifle I am using has a 20" barrel with a 1/7 twist.

Federal Gold Medal Match and Black Hills match are two good options.
But honestly, if you can afford to spend the money on a 1000 rounds of commercially loaded match ammo, you can afford to invest in hand loading. With respect to time and space requirements - where there is a will, there is a way.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will look into them.

Unfortunately the time requirement is the issue in regards to reloading. Between work and chasing my 18 month old around ....its tough to even find time for the range.
At this time a couple hundred rounds would last me quite a while.

Would there be a significant difference in accuracy between the higher quality ammo from what I have been shooting? I am shooting out to 300 yards at a 10" steel plate, with iron sights quite successfully. Would any errors in accuracy be my fault at that point? Or could I potentially notice a difference using a better ammo?

Unless you're using high quality iron sights and are very confident in your skills, match ammo might not be the best for you.

A standard fsp on an Ar is 14 moa unless I'm mistaken....

If you are plinking at a 10" plate at 300, I can't see the point in using match grade ammunition.

I guess what I am trying to determine is whether at that distance, my missed shots are caused by my own lack of ability or in the projectile inaccuracy. I get the impression the firearm itself is very capable. So looking to improve the faults in other areas. Obviously practicing is a critical part, but good quality ammo must be a part of the equation as well?

Is match grade ammo simply for use well beyond the distance I am currently looking to shoot out to?

You are shooting at a target that is about three minutes of angle. A decent rifle with most any decent ammunition will shoot less than 3 minutes, should ring the gong consistently.

I would suggest that mounting an optic would be the first thing to do.

You're using irons at 300y.... The inaccuracy with that is well beyond any incremental difference between match and bulk ammo.

If your goal is to improve at shooting irons at distance, then I would say get a decent set of iron sights first before sinking money in to match ammo.

And a decent trigger will help a lot too

Okay, thanks for the great info guys. My knowledge about the differences between match and bulk ammo is very limited. So I am now starting to getting a better sense of it all.

I would really like to challenge myself with the iron sights initially, so I will look into some parts upgrades for the rifle and just keep practicing with some reasonably priced ammo for now.

The rifle fitted with irons is no more or less accurate than it is with a scope...the shooter with that combo is a different matter.
I would print the ammo you are currently using on paper at 300 yards, and if you are happy with it, keep banging away at the steel.

With a little one running around, I'd still recommend saving the money you'll spend on commercial ammo and get into handloading.
