5.56 NATO tracer ammo?

They are? Dammit. I just read the FAQ and didn't see them there.

Best interpretation I have seen is that commercial importation/sales of them is illegal, while personal possession is not. That means you have to find a person who has some in Canada that is willing to part with them, privately.

only illegal to import not illegal to own,buy or shoot

that said tracers are junk they lose weight as the fly down range so they fly off corse (look at vids online of poeple shooting mg's with tracer) and theres no range in canada that would let you shoot them that i know of i would not shoot them in the brush as that is how fires start.

there is a company that sells stickers to reloader that trace the bullet without burning and without losing weight i forget what company this was now

They're fun to shoot! But like it was mentioned above, they aren't accurate. I've got some that I could sell for the right price!

Not technically true, since only safety cartridges are allowed the special explosives exemptions, and tracers are not safety cartridges. I wrote a detailed post in the ammo section on the subject.

But again, no one at NRCAN, or anywhere in gov cares.

See my post, it has links to all the various convoluted rules that are not enforced (which is good). You will have to search for the post, as they never made it a sticky, despite this coming up every two days.

This is the only other thread in the Ammo forum with posts by CanAm and containing "tracer".

http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=448742&highlight=tracer

But I don't think it is the one he is thinking of.

Searching the whole site for posts by CanAm and "tracer" also unearths these:

I bought a 10rd box of #7-1/2 12GA tracers at Gagnon Sports around 2002 or so. They had like 500 boxes just piled up on the floor.

FYI, they were crap. bout 6 or 7 out of ten actually worked.

tracer shotshells are something different all together the shot is coated in something other then a tracer mix idk what it is but it does not burn

From time to time guys ask if it is safe to shoot 5.56 in a 223. I always answers "yes".

BUT, tracer is different. It has a very long bullet in it. When fired in a short throated SAAMI chamber, the bullet engages the rifling when the base of the bullet is still below the case shoulder. This can cause pressure problems. (Think "rivet".)

The reason military rifles have a 1:7 twist is to accommodate this long tracer bullet. not needed for the 62 gr ball ammo. The NATO chamber throat is also deeper and tapered to better handle the tracer round.

Yes, it is also very inaccurate (about a foot group at 100 yards) and will easily start a fire on the range.

not going to argue the legality of tracers .. but will share with you my inquiry to a CFO some time ago and his written responce (after checking with his superior) was that they considered them prohibited and were only for military or ert use.

being said ... you could find yourself in a bit of a predicament that ended up wasting alot of your time at best ... or worse .. depends how you look at it. All depends if Murphy (murphy's law) follows you around!!

firing a 5.56 in a .223 chamber is not a good idea 5.56 is loaded hotter then
.223 you can fire a .223 in a 5.56 chamber
