Hi there. I have accumulated an abundance of 5.56 brass over the last year and looking to start reloading it. I reload my pistol ammo but the 5.56 will be a new one. I’m shooting a DD rifle with 11.3 inch barrel and looking to use 55Gr projectiles.

From what I’ve read briefly online, it can be tricky to find a good recipe for short barrel rifles due to unburnt powder, while also trying not to drop the powder loads to an unsafe low level. I personally like the flash with my brake so I’m not too concerned about a bit of unburnt powder.

If you have a recipe that’s worked for you in the past, or any advice I’d like to hear it. Thanks in advance and have a good day.

What I load and shoot from my 12.5 and 14.5 inch barrels (Noveske, 5.56 chamber):

Brass - mixed
Primer - CCI 400 small rifle
Bullet - Hornady 55gr FMJBT (seated to cannelure for crimping).
Powder - Winchester 748, 26 grains (will be trying Hodgdon CFE223 in the future)

I process my brass by cleaning it (if brass is used/dirty, otherwise I don't), full length size, trim (using a Giraud Tri-Way Trimmer that trims and chamfers and deburrs) and clean again (removes sizing lube and any brass shavings).
You may also need to decrimp the primer pocket.
I also do a light crimp.
I have obtained 1 MOA groups at 100 meters with a 4X optics from a bench, with this load.

I’ll give that recipe a try. Thanks for input. Let me know how the cfe 223 works out. Thanks:)

Brass -mixed
Primer - CCI 450
Bullet - Campro 55grn (crimped in cannelure)
Powder - H335 24.3 grains.
Works in everything I own from 18.5" down to 7.5"

Thanks for all the recipes guys. Sounds like some good options out there.

My barrel’s 1/7 twist. DD 10.3” barrel.

Which powder would you say gives the biggest muzzle flash?
