5.56 vs 223 reamer.

The reamer will be large in dimensions compared to a .233 match grade reamer. I built a .223 for a fellow who wanted an accurate rifle. I used a match grade minimum reamer and headspaced correctly... he couldn't use his surplus ammo... not because of the depth of the throat but because the 5.56 ammo was loaded so crooked it would not fit a nice chamber. Rolling a 5.56 cartridge on a smooth surface you could see how wonky the ammo was...

The 556 chamber was a much longer throat. If you are loading very heavy, long bullets, it may make getting near the lands difficult and will probably make it impossible to also fit those rounds inside a magazine.

If you want a match grade rifle then 556 is the wrong chamber for that.

If this is for a sloppy semi-auto, then it doesn't really matter.

FWIW the Wylde chamber is basically a 223 case size with a 556 throat. Also not the right choice for long, heavy bullets that also need to run through a magazine.

Thank you gentlemen, for some reason I imagined the standard reamers would be similar dimensions, but according to the internet and you guys 5.56 is quite a bit bigger.

Any suggestions as to how I can rent, or buy an appropriate one? Looks like PGT has a 223 Kiff ISSF reamer, anything else?

I would look at Manson or JGS reamers. Big Horn Sales might have something in stock as well.

From what I've seen PTG haven't been overly reliable in the last while

My last reamer from PTG is excellent, but that's just one. The others I have are five years earlier but all of them are as good as anything else available.

The last few years I've heard of a few reamers that were not what they were supposed to be but their main problem has been delivering things on time. Their have been stories of people waiting almost a year or more for something that was supposedly in stock and keep getting the runaround.
