5-stand driving me crazy!

Spank, That was an awesome score for 5 stand for just about anyone , let alone for anyone whose normal game is Trap or Skeet. You are either an excellent all round shooter or you had a lucky day.....Please try it again somewhere and report back to those us who are struggling to convert from Skeet/Trap to Sporting !!

I am hoping to put a fundraising effort together to rebuild our skeet field and incorporate a 5-stand into it. We have 6 trap fields, 4 of which get used one weekend a year. Our skeet field is in need of rebuilding so my thought is make it an all in one. Like I said I tried it once over 20 years ago. My vision was 20/15 in those days and I was at the top of my shooting game back then. I would love to shoot it again. It was fun. Thanks for the compliment, I think?

Well THAT made me feel better. LOL I just shot 5 stand for the first time and mustered up a score of 10 or so.

I wouldn't let that bother me. The first time I shot trap I was 19 and shot a 12/25. My father who never shot a flying target of any kind in his life shot a 13/25 on his first try that day. I was disgusted my Dad beat me, lol. I went back to the skeet field the restof the season. Through other shooters encouraging(bugging) me I tried it again and shot two more rounds breaking a 47/50. That summer I started to shoot more trap. A fellow club member lent me a gun to try one day he was selling as I felt it was time to step up from my plain barreled 870 Wingmaster 28" mod. He had a Rem 1100 Tournament Trap with a 32" Baker barrel and Timney trigger. I ran 122 straight before dropping a target that day. I also bought the gun on the spot, well my father did as I was a bit short on funds. I paid my father back that summer and started shooting that gun as much as I could afford. It fit like a glove. Two summers later I started shooting ATA at a few members encouragement and attended the 88th Grand American(1987).To this point I had shot maybe 1500 - 16 yard targets to date and 200 handicap including every practice round I had shot. I broke a 199/200 in the singles championship, earned a spot in the shoot-offs and ended with a 10th place finish and High Foreign Champion. Okay my point? Find a gun that fits and shoot as much as you can!!

Sounds like the conversation we had while trying to muster a squad to shoot California Clays on Monday night. A number grumbled that they would rather shoot skeet, it throws them off to shoot Skrap or California Clays or even Trap for that matter. Too many different angles and leads to figure out. I always point out what my father said, you don't learn by only doing easy things. You become a better shot by practise and increased difficulty. One member at our club only shoots .410 in practise another shoots skeet with I/M under Full in his K-80, this usually shows it's worth on their posted scores come tournament time.

When nobody was around I used to step back into the parking lot at the club I started shooting at to shoot long range crossing skeet targets. The parking area ran parallel to the # 2 skeet field and from behind the waist high fence was about 30 yards. Shooting from deeper into the parking area I could get 40 yards easily. It was great practice though to be honest sporting clays or 5 stand were not around in Ontario at that time so my motivation was wanting to learn leads at distance to kill ducks.
