Are there any actions out that at a reasonable price to start a .50 BMG project on? I also have a .500 Whisper reamer coming and need to access reasonably priced barrels if anyone has anything. These are my learning experience into this realm and I hope it's somewhat smooth. I have owned 5 or more .50 rifles of various styles and configuration.
Any help would be appreciated.
Rob

No idea how you managed to get "whisper" reamer as they are on the list of things non-exportable, don't need to know, but hope you do get it in. ANYTHING for 50 cal is NOT cheap anymore due to the hassle created by the US banning the export of EVERYTHING 50 cal. Most of us have resorted to sourcing barrels from Europe now, as we run out of previously imported barrels, since the US put the export ban in place.
There are I believe only 3 Canadian makers for 50 cal actions, PGW , Gaulin in Quebec, and my shop making actions, all of which are well over the $2000.00 mark for a bare action.
The 500 whisper could be built on a CZ550 action as they are long enough to make a single shot from, and are easy to work with. The P17 may have length to work. You won't find any commercial action that will work as a repeater inexpensively, due to the sheer OAL cartridge dimensions

ATR,
Thw Whisper is a .460 trimmed to 2" length. I plan to turn the rims to a rebated configuration to make the action work easier. I am happy with a single shot so of course the Ruger #1 should work rebated or not. I would like to find .50 barrels though. I would also like a .50 BMG but the cost of a $2000 bare action is prohibitive to me. I have a few other .50 rifles and lots of componants and equipement to load the big things, even a good selection of moulds for slow loads. What do you think of the big Russian action, the RTRD I believe, is this a possibility or would it require a lot more than a rebarrel job?
Thanks,
Rob

Casull A rebated 460 case makes good sense to me, I assumed you were doing the full length 460 version. Still with bullets like the 750 Amax you may not have enough mag , or bolt throw to clear a live round in a bolt. The No1 idea is good . To use a PRTD will ensue boltface issues, not insurmountable, depending on how talented a welder/machinst you are. I have a couple of big Ruskies , and am trying to track down a reliable source for ammo for them.
Apparently South Afrika still uses them, and better yet in brass cases.
For you whisper you will not need a real long barrel so I may be able to be of some help there. My problem is getting the 36" long 50 cal barrels I like to make my guns with, shorter barrels are around from time to time.

I too have a PTRD. Wolverine, in Manatoba brought in a few, with the intention of reballing to 50BMG, all for under $2000. After arriving, they realized it would be more involved than originally expected. So they sold them off as original.
As a military equipment fan, that is my preference.
But be aware, that if you go this route, it may not be worth it. Talk to Wovlerine.

Also, Dlask Arms in Delta BC is planning to get into the 50BMG game also.
