ive just finished my first 50 and on its first outing its shooting sub 2moa @ 100 and 400 :):D

what groups have people been getting from 50bmg m2 ball ammo?
and what dose the same gun shoot with hand loads or match ammo?

I plan to reload just have to make the empty brass first and get a case trimer

i dont think id be too worried about hitting a tight group with a 50, any center mass hit will cause any live target its hitting to explode :D

Well all I can say about my LRT-3 is wow. I found a load that it likes, finished load developement and came out with 231g Vit 20N29 750 Amax running 2730 to 2750 in LC brass. At 550y the 3 round group messured 1.9 inches center to center.
Good luck with yours.

Hitting a 5" diameter steel gong at 1000 yards with my Nemesis is not a tough task.
Make NO mistake a 50 CAN be very accurate.
IIRC the world record for group was under just 2" at 1000 yards for a 5 shot group by Lee Rasmussen

You should try and get out past 2km with your LRT before DG Photography does with his!!!! Beat him too it!!!! You got the longer Barrel!!! ;) :D (hopefully he doesnt see this :ninja: :ninja: :ninja: :D)

You are getting good groups for ball ammo (can't really expect much better than 2 MOA from machine gun ammo).

A good match grade .50 caliber rifle is fully as accurate as the best 6.5mm, 7mm and .30 cal match rifles. I don't know what kind of .50 you have, but like all rifles the good accuracy normally starts with the "3 Bs" - which is to say, bullets, barrels and bedding (you need to use good quality bullets, you need a good barrel, and your action needs to be bedded well).

parts are all good

a Barnard gp action
a New Zealand made barrel
mcmillan stock bedded with pillars ect
my design muzzle brake
manson reamer

now its just to see if the assembly was any good ( my first build )

Limiting factor with BMG's is bullets. FMJ's just dont cut it. Be prepared to prep that brass too.

ABC bullets in Salmon Arm make a decent turned bullet and I have shot these in a similar rig as your rifle.

Lapua has some really nice ones. Hrn Amax might be available if you look hard.

Unless you are shooting a match bullet, accuracy is not going to be very impressive no matter what you do or shoot it in.

Next problem will be quality dies. Standard FL sizers and seaters may not give you the precision you want in loading top quality match ammo.

There is little reason why your rig can't shoot sub MOA way the heck out there.

It's making the right ammo to feed it that will be the challenge.

thanks Jerry

ive got some Butram and Lapua to try

and just ordered a full set of prep tools

trimmer
inside and out side neck

anything else ill need ?

im just hopeing the hornday die set is up to it =)

this thing is like setting fire to $20 bills

I have had it to 1680y amd was under MOA on that run. Hopefully get her out to streach her legs.

We have steel set up fromm 550 all the way to 1100y. You know when you have hit it. :D

how thick is the steel?

I bought this one from Calvin at Quality Targets $135 shipped to USA address .625" thick thats over 1/2" of AR500 15" width 17" height. He does ship to Canada.

thats a pretty sweet chunk of steel. have you considered going to a place that sells steel and cuts it for you? might be cheaper than buying those expensive gongs. if youre in the niagara area i can send you the location of a couple spots ive used for steel in the past

The problem is finding a place that will sell and cut 1 piece of AR 500 and not want a minimum order of 1 sheet. AR 500 is pretty exspensive and you need to use care when cutting if you use to much heat you will ruin the temper of the AR500. If you know of a place that can do it for cheaper please let me know I will be all over it:D

ill pm you the number of the place ive used im just trying to think of the exact name so i can google search it for you. theyre pretty good with steel and have a nice assortment.

what if you were to use a thicker piece of steel instead? im guessing the ar isnt a very hard piece otherwise it would be brittle and not too soft otherwise it would just deform.

Measure the runout as your go. That will tell you whether the gear is up to the task

A thicker piece of steel is still too soft and just gets pitted and can cause ricochet. The AR 500 is hardened to 500 -550 brinnel and will not shatter or chip except for the edges sometimes can chip a little.
