Are there any tricks involved when trying to de cap a 50 casing ? I cannot for the life of me get the cap out .

To make matters worse , i cant get the casing out of the shell holder because the cap is half out !

Getting frustrated .

A couple questions:

1. Are you using a press designed for reloading 50 BMG?
2. Is the press secured earthquake-proof, grown man hanging onto lever - to a table?
3. Did you lube the sweet jebus out of the case?

Lol . Yes to all the above . Just finished the 3rd re load bench . Others all broke . Still having a hell of a time trying to de cap . Using Lee die set .

I hear that, If I could have went back in time I would have saved up for the Dillon .50 BMG Press and mounted it to a Steel re-enforced table!

What type of Brass are you using, I know some of the Lake City can be a b*tch - not sure if they had Military crimps or not.

Military crimp can be vey, very difficult - exceedingly hard on decapping pins. Don't bother with decapping using a die for 1F military crimp - nothing but frustration and grief. Buy a 1/8 punch and drive each primer out over a large anvil (the square hole at the rear of the anvil) as a separate operation before FL resizing. I broke two RCBS Ammo Master basses (and countless decapping pins) before I learned this. The Ammo Master is only useful for priming, no where near strong enough for FL sizing/1F decapping 50bmg. Use Corbin or Ch4D Rock Crusher.

If you are stuck on the brass as it sounds that you are, I would dissassemble the die while mounted in the press- screw out the decapping rod, then screw out die body from press. Follow with screwing out the shell holder. Drive the primer back in with a punch, remove the case from the holder and drive the primer out with a punch.

I have deprimed and sized 200 rounds of LC crimped 50 in my LEE press and dies and had no issues at all. Just put a little weight on that handle and they will deprime. One thing I did do though was to set the decapping pin down as far as I dared just to get the decapping process over before the case was into the heavy duty sizing part of the cycle.

Thanks for that info , i'll try that tonight . I was getting worried because i'm a noob at this and it wasn't happeneing . I deprimed about 50 338 Lapua cassings before this with no issues , this .50 though !!!

I too found LC (and PMC) to be relatively uneventful in decapping 1F. The most difficult 'brands' that I have found to decap, are IVI and eastern european (where the primers are crimped using a full 'circle' punch).
