So the Americans arent selling to us. which 50 cal rifles can we buy? I know Accuracy International is one and christiansen. Any others?

You can also buy the Steyr HS .50, which I think is the most popular here in Canada. I don't think you can buy Barrett parts here in Canada (correct me if I'm wrong).
By the way, how much does a McMillan Tac-50 go for?

PGW in Winnipeg and ATR in Calgary will both build you one, there's a builder in Quebec, I forget his name but I examined one of his rifles at the 50 shoot here last summer, it was a pretty good looking rifle. The Steyr is available off the rack, maybe the AI, those are the only one's I've actually seen. - dan

Well 5000+ is a good used car to me. :D Is there any cheaper ones? I've heard of a couple under $2000.
.50 cal is not a poor man's game. The "under $2000" line can be attributed to Wolverines advertising of a 50 project, where they were going to put .50 cal barrels onto PTRD rifles. Turned out to be a bigger project than they expected, so in the end they sold the rifles off as 14.5mm.
I think Marstar also promised a .50 cal for around that price, but it never materialised either.
One that could be done for around that price (if your lucky) is to find a live or deactivated Boyes rifle (origionally in .55 cal) and have the barrel changed to .50 cal. I supplied the gun and the barrel to PGW a bunch of years back, and they did the conversion for $500, although they said they would not do another for that price.
I said if your lucky, cause I have a friend looking for a Boyes for a couple of years and found nothing in this country available, even at twice that price.

Well how about buying a 50 cal AI barrel and action and using a mcmillan stock, would that work in saving money? Would I be able to send the stocks back if they dont fit? I'll probally end up getting an AI in the long run anyway so I can buy it by parts and hopefully substitute another stock for theres.

Years ago a friend of mine built a 50 cal of sorts......it used a 50 bmg barrel turned down and shortened......a P-14 action converted to single shot with a custom stock......the cartridge was a custom job 460 weatherby case form fired to 50 cal......using surplus 50 bmg 750 gr bullets he was getting 80% of the velocity of a 50 BMG without the expensive primers or the huge powder consumption.....it did cost him a custom reamer.....recoil was

That's basically a 500 A-square. - dan

I have not kept up on the price of the Accuracy International .50 cal, but when I saw them years ago, they ran around $18,000. And the US state dept. won't allow any components of 50 cal rifles or ammo out of the country, except for military or police end users. So I doubt that you would save much either by buying AI components, or reliably (legally) import any 50 cal accessories.

Now, if you had bought the Steyr last year, you would already be ahead of the game. I see the retail price has gone up by about $700.

I want mine to have a magazine. :D The AI is British so its not up to Americans. Hopefully theres a good source for foreign 50 cal ammo.

I want mine to have a magazine.

So go the Boyes rifle route. They have a 5 round mag, which only needs a slight modification to accept the .55 cal round.
You could likely get one done up, or find one in .50 cal for the $4K to $5K range, and with the $10,000++ you save from buying an accuracy, you can buy 2 used cars.

Hopefully theres a good source for foreign 50 cal ammo.

Not that I've seen. Any foreign ammo still has to be on the acceptable ammo list, and because the US ban on .50 cal ammunition and it's components is relatively new, the list does not include a lot of foreign sources for .50 cal.
I don't believe our .50 cal market is big enough to qualify any importer for any kind of a quantity discount on ammo. It wasn't that many years ago that we were seeing .50 cal surplus for $3 a round...now your paying in the area of $7-10 per round.

As has been said before, the .50 cal game is not a thrifty man's hobby.

Since theres such a need for it, would'nt it be a good business if some Canadian company made 50 cal ammo from scratch? They could even just make the brass and primer from scratch and buy premade gunpowder to put in them.

We can't even get .303 made up, and theres 10s of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of Enfields here in the country. I don't think the (few) hundred or so .50 cal guns in existance here will warrant any kind of quantity production. The DND gets theirs made up in Canada, but there are no civilian sales of the ammo from the producer, and the DND won't sell surplus ammo. But the brass does get sold (albeit by the triwall), so at least theres that little tidbit. And who really has the shoulder to shoot dozens of rounds of .50 cal in a day?
Alberta Tactical sells the components to make up the rounds. But again, not a thrifty man's game.

Also from SNC's site. The Cdn government has a hand into who can buy their products. And the government doesn't really want us to have any guns, and thought they had closed off the .50 cal rifles back when they banned the early Barrets and McMillans, so they aren't likely to make an exception for the 50 cal shooters anytime soon.
