What is the best metal for the 500 and 1000 yard gongs. I have some thick ones and there is not audible report that you have hit it, only movement.
I would like to find something that lets me know when I ring it. At 500 yards, a 270 cal 130 gr SP win, just splat on 2 inch plate.
I've heard that you only need 1/4 inch plate at 1000 yards, is this true?
Any info would be appreciated.

I have some big-ass saw blades (24" 18" and 16") that I have suspended by some chains. They ring for sure, but they are brittle. I poke at them up to a mile. I paint them with da-glo line marking paint and the hits are amazingly easy to see with a 36X scope.

I'm using 1/2" thick QT500 plate. Hung by chain.
I believe the thinner the better when your going for sound. 2"thick would be just a thud from the bullet hitting.

Here is a video I made not long ago, you can hear the gong hit on the second shot. The video is my GF shooting it at 950yds.

Find an air cooled volkswagon engine flywheel. Damn near bulletproof and rings like a bell. Might have been chromoly. I've shot them with fmj 308 and it only leaves a shiny spot.

Just for interest sake (maybe it ain't)....heres the penetrator from a 50BMG round stuck in a 4" flange...don't know exactly what steel they are made of.

Target was at 638 yds.....remaining velocity should be 1940fps, energy 5396 ft lbs.
Note how the tip of the penetrator is still sharp.
I have one of these stuck in a rock also....they are some HARD stuff.

Targets

If your shooting at those distances,a cheap target that rings nice is old cast iron frying pans. You can buy them at garage sales ,and they have that convienient handle to hang by.Not to mention diferent sizes.:D

Sounds like a good idea for rimfire. I can't imagine it holding up to a centerfire rifle though. What have you tested it on?

go to the nearest oil field fab shop, quite often they have many multiple sized round steel cutouts in the scap bin of all thicknesses. i have got everthing from 2" all the way up to 36". at 1000yards 1/4" is fine , but it will bow in time from all the hits, 3/8 and thicker are the best. so far as seeing hits paint em white, yellow or orange. hits are easily visable on most days, except when the mirage is extreme. buy a set of electronic muffs and you will be amazed at what you can hear way out there.

What thickness would you use for 100 yards for a 223.Want to hang some in the tress and do fast shooting with semis?

If your just using mild steal you want 1/2" or thicker... at 200 1/4 still gets holes blown threw it. I have a piece that looks like swiss cheese.

I used 1/2" 5x8 inches at 200 yards and it just gets dints in it.

Worn out highway snow plow cutting edges, usually AR500 steel.
When worn they are down to 4 to 5 inch width and usually made of 1/2" by 6 ft. with mounting holes every 8". I cut them into 8" lengths with the existing holes near the end.
Fasten a sheet of corplast to them and it is easy to see them swing at distance.
