Howdy
Looking for some load info for 500grainers.
Rifle is a Pedersoli 1874 Sharps.
Up until now, only shot my 405grainers, that I cast.
Anyone out there with some advice on the 500's?
Thanks
I use a lot of load data from the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook. They have a lot of powders that work with 500gr cast bullets.
My rifle is an H&R Handi Rifle.
The best for me was 40gr of H4895 under a Lee .459" plain base 500gr cast spire point. Chronied 1447fps and easily punched through 12-14" poplar trees and kept on trucking. Great for putting your shoulder back into the socket if it was knocked out.
30gr of H4198 for me gave 1254fps and was still pretty firm on the recoil.
For a light load with easier recoil I use 16gr of Bluedot under the same bullet. Chronied 1132fps but I never tried being a lumberjack with them (yet).
Lightest of all is of course Trail Boss. 15gr chronies 976fps in my rifle.
I've been meaning to buy and try out some of the Hornady 500gr dangerous game solids but can't bring myself to pay $1.25 per projectile when I cast my own for a fraction of that.
I found recipes in this site. http://www.bpcr.net/index-a.htm
A whack of good info about all other aspects of BP shooting too. I shoot swiss 1 1/2f and goex 2f bp in my Pedersoli Sharps 45/70. Presently running 65 grains of drop tube guided powder with 2 - .060 card wads between powder and bullet with a 1/16 inch powder compression.
Some light plinking loads here http://www.gmdr.com/lever/lowveldata.htm I use these in my H&R Buffalo Classic.
read lots!!
