Iam thinking of getting a Handi rifle in 500SW but ammo or even components seems out of sight. Iam a serious reloader but, is this just impractical as it seems to be?? I already have five 45-70's but this one has my interest, especially when I read about 600- 700 grain hard cast bullet some guys are using, any opinions would be of great value. Thanks

I have a Handi rifle in .500, great fun to shoot, have a red dot on mine, ammo is very expensive $65+ per 20 rnd box for the hornadys....very hard to find as well will shoot a few more boxes before i start reloading

also if anyone knows who has .500S&W ammo in stock please post in this thread!:D

I have the Handi rifle in 500S&W and I only shoot reloads. Price of factory loads is crazy. Less than 20 cents each this way.

Cast 440gr FNGC from the Lee mold, with a max load of H110. Accurate enough, if I manage to keep my eyes open. Kicks like a mule...but fun.
Same bullet with 10 or 11grs of Trailboss is much nicer to shoot.

I have an H&R in 500 S&W, 45-70 and 45-90. Both the 45-70 and 45-90 can do anything the 500 S&W can do energy-wise (and more), except they can't be a 50 cal that can shoot 700 gr bullets. I love it, but a fully stoked load with the 700 gr bullet is the most painful experience I've ever had, and I want to do it again soon.

I dont shoot my H&R 500 S&W anymore, it is to brutal and not pleasant, another one shove in the back of the safe... JP.

Try that with a revolver ;)

I have both the H&R Handi-Rifle as well as the S&W revolver in 500S&W and both are quite fun. I reload and get all my components from Henry at Budget Shooter Supply (banner at top of page). Great guy to deal with and decent pricing. I get all my 500 components from him. I haven't shot cast but picked up both Barry's plated as well as a couple Hornady bullets, 350gr JHP and 500gr JSP. Always puts a smile on my face
