looking to get a truck gun.

i have a 500 for hunting, so another 500 would be good for parts interchangability, or a mav88
opinions on the two?

it will be set up with pistol grip only, and 18.5 barrel.

A Maverick is a 500.
Pistol grip only shotguns are the absolute most useless thing on the planet. You have zero control. And you can be charged with unsafe storage if you store a firearm in your vehicle. If you ever become victim of a crime by having your truck stolen, you will be charged.

your legal misinformation discredits your opinion on the gun.

Location of the safety is the biggest difference that I can think of. The mav might actually work better for you if you are using it as PGO.

Sunray strikes again! Lol

i heard mav has one slide bar, and will fail sooner than a 500?

(meanwhile my winchester model 12 has yet to fail)

The fore end is not removable like the 500, it is moulded into the action bars otherwise I have "heard" (not from you know who ;) ) that the trigger group including the safety are cheaper made.

Barrels and butt interchange with the 500's that I have. (short mag tube)

Also a side note: I would handle the gun you are looking at buying, I have heard they range from smooth to bag of rocks rough.

i currently have a 500. it has wood furn.

ive thought about swapping the butt for a pgo, but that would look ugly AF with plastic butt and wood fore.

im willing to acquire a whole new gun, just to avoid my guns being ugly.

For your requirements, it is pretty hard to choose a Maverick over a 500 Persuader 8-shot with pistol grip; while it may sport a slightly longer 20" barrel, it holds 7+1

There is a 20" 88 Security model that looks similar, but for $370-375 from a couple CGN Vendors, personally I'd take the better quality, 10 year warranty and a more favourable safety for a truck gun.

There is also a Mariner version of this 500 if you want the more durable finish, but around the $500 mark.

I second the Persuader. Although it is 8+1, even better.
Somewhat difficult to find in stock recently, not sure about current status with site dealers. I know Cabelas is showing in stock though.

I have one of the original Mavericks and it only has one action bar. It's been through hell and back and I've never worried about it breaking.

I am looking for a 28" Accuchoke barrel for my 6 year old 88. I went to CT and checked out a new 88 with this barrel. There is no comparison.

The new 88 had a dull finish on the bolt/internals. It was also very rough when I operated the pump.

I decided not to buy the unit because I just could not re-sell that action with my short barrel.

I will check out a full 500 this weekend and see if they are any better.

The 88 is really just the economy version of the 500 ; if you want to save a few bucks , the 88 will serve you just fine . If you want a little better quality control , and do not mind spending a little more money , go with the 500 . With a pistol grip , both will only be good for close range shooting.......

I have both and neither has ever let me down. For pistol grip shooting I would prefer the 500 because of the tang mounted safety, but that would be the only preference. The 88 is a little rougher around the edges but I have fed that thing absolute crap and it keeps chewing through it. If I were to throw one in a truck for its lifetime I would go with an 88 just because it's cheaper and still as reliable. I would also opt for a short barrel and keep the butt stock on, but that's just me.

The 88's I looked at some time ago had a single action bar- if that matters.
I had an older 500 and preferred it over the newer 500 I have now. I don't like how you can't swap fore ends or clean out the mag tube (and the plastic trigger).
But my grips aside, I kick the hell out of it and it always works. I've dumped it in salt water, froze it, dragged through the sand and generally treated it poorly.
I even take it to the trap range every now and then.
Spray a little lube and that's all it's ever asked for.
Considering what I paid it's probably one of the best deals out there...
I'd like to try out a 590 though.
