Just wondering if anyone has tried the Hornady 500gr interlock/DGS/DGX or swift A-frames in the 500gr range in a Marlin 1895 45/70?

Anyone try any other heavy bullets designed for the 458 win mag in a 45/70 and have them work out?

I was thinking of getting a new field gun and losing the shotgun and if these bullets will work well in a Marlin I'd be sold in a heartbeat.

might be a bit long to be really usefull in your levergun...You may also want to check if they will expand well at lower velocities . Personally I use a 500gr. Flat point hard cast bullet

I believe that the crimping provision is in the wrong place on those 500s.

It is indeed. I shot some of those out of my throated Ruger #1 in .45-70. With starting loads from the Hornady manual they were in the 1400fps range IIRC.

When seated to the crimp groove they are far too long to work in my Marlin, and as a matter of fact, are also too long for the throat in my Browning Traditional Hunter.

Chris.

They might not expand well at 45-70 velocities either. A cast bullet with a nice wide meplat would be really effective, and a lot cheaper to shoot, too. Ben H is the cast bullet guy on CGN and can fix you up with something suitable. Bullet Barn in BC also has 450 gr. RNFP. Another CGN'ner (Camp Cook, I think) has been using 525 gr. "Craters" from Jae-bok Young in the US. Any of these will hit like the hammer of Thor and keep on going.

We can't get them up here, but Belt Mountain in the US does a heavy, flat nose brass slug with a lead core. Gunblast did a review of them online. $3.00 each in 510 gr. so they're not for casual plinking!

Cast your own and you wont have to worry about import time's, and it's a hellofa lot cheaper.
Any lead will work.
If you shoot something with a 45-70 and it walk's away with a near 1/2 inch hole in it, you shouldn't be hunting it.

Seating a 500 jacketed bullet so deep to cycle thru a GG you loose precious powder space for top velocities, if you want to shoot 500s then you might as well save the $$ & load lead bullets. Expansion would likely be similar with either bullet.

I don't wish to hijack this or change topic but with all recommending lead cast bullets will this cause a buildup of lead in the barrel? If so will it ever be enough to effect accuracy of a slug that size. I just got a 45-70 double rifle and wish to shoot 500gr bullets if I can

I'm thinking this is why copper jacketed 450 grain weight have a market in 45-70s.
The OP may want to check this out.
