I have a 12FV and I've been told that bullet weights slightly below 70gr. are perfect (ie 68gr. Hornady or 69gr. Sierra) for the 1:9" rate of twist. I'd like to get some advice on a good starting load for 55gr. FMJ's that I see on the boards for cheap. Sometimes I just want to shoot clays at 200m or teach a friend about shooting, and for those purposes I suspect a 55gr. FMJ would work quite nicely! I've got lots of Varget from past loading sessions.

Anyone have sources for 55gr. FMJs in or within a few provinces of Nova Scotia?

Thanks CGN'ers!

55gr in a 1:9 should work good. Since you have Varget on hand try anywhere from 25-26gr. I set mine up for 25.5gr which seems to work best in my AR15.

My experience has been that the AR15 doesn't like 55 grainers,it likes a heavier ie longer bullet.68-70 grains.Depends on the barrel's twist rate.

I traded off my AR15 because it wouldn't shoot 55 grain bullets well.It was a Colt HBar.I regret it some, but made a GOOD TRADE.

Was your HBAR that didn't shoot 55gn well a 1/7?

I shoot ARs with 1/7 and 1/9 barrels, I find my 1/9s (measure to 1/8.5) consistently shoot tighter groups with 55gn ball than my 1/7 barrels (1" vs 1.5").

When 55gn was the US ball ammo they used a 1/12. The Swiss chose a 1/10 barrel for their 63gn ball, they seem to care about these things. ;)

I haven't found a mag-fed length bullet that the 1/9 (8.5) won't stabilize.

Colt certainly has lots of 1/7 blanks on hand to build rifles with, but they use a 1/9 on their CR6724 Accurized Rifle.
