Hello i just did the search function and read a few post on these puppies. they belonged to my moms great grandfather. She even has a picture of him with his gun and a nice big ol bear. She is wondering what the best way of deactivating these so she can display them.

Beside is .40sw

To prserve the looks, use a kinetic puller to knock out the bullet, dump the powder, squirt in some penetrating oil (to eventually kill the primer) and re-seat the bullet. Someone who load this caliber could do this for you.

Why do you have to deactivate them? I don't think they are required to be deactivated to be displayed in a house and there isn't much chance of them randomly going off

ive tried to explain that factor that i doubt theyd go off randomly, but to ease their minds i said id look into it, personally id see it as a shame to deactivate perfectly good ammo

When reassembled it will look just like it had never been apart!
SO WHY BOTHER??
It's not like it's gonna explode sitting there!
Just tell her the above has been done ;)

Come on guys, where are you going to find someone, "who still reloads for 57 Snider?"
It would be impossible to pull the bullet and reseat it, without it being plain that such operation took place.
They are collector pieces, so why not do as every other collector does and just leave them alone.
As a point of interest, many years ago I was given a 57 Snider cartridge, same brand, that the person found in the bush, while he was hunting in northern Saskatchewan in the 1930s! His foot moved something shiny and there it was.
I still ahve it and it hasn't blown up yet!!!

ya i really want to keep them, so i think im just gonna convince her they are safe somehow lol. id really really like to find the gun they went with though, going to have to dig into the family barns and sheds, mught still be kickin around

thanks guys
