I was thinking of buying one of the rifled 12 gauge to .45acp. adapters(or .30 carbine)and turning it down to .577 snider size on my lathe
i know it would only have the accuracy of a short barrelled pistol but at least i could shoot it more often.
I searched the web to see if anyone else has done this and couldn't find anyone else who's tried it maybe I'm missing something anyone
see why it wont work.

Im purely repeating something that's brought up with other adapter discussions but what is the thrust associated with a 45acp?

Also if the adaptor is too long the end could be tapered or reduced in diameter to angle it into the chamber

Modified .45ACP /12ga. Adaptor in .57 Snider

Pull the barrel and action out of the stock, soak the back of the action in an excellent penetrant and VERY carefully turn out the breechplug/tang assembly. Do not insert the adaptor and reassemble until you have the extraction system figured out and working ( unless you are just planning on using the clearing rod). Now go have some fun! Kayceel

Worth considering for sure. Might not "fail" but higher thrust could work things loose. Some handy formulas out there for calculating breach thrust. If you hand load em light it should be no problem regardless, otherwise calculate it and consider it. There are .45 Colt adapters around too

the shorter adapters are 3" in length and the snider rounds i have are 2 1/2 so the length would have to be trimmed maybe there wouldn't be enough rifling left
to have any accuracy.
i was thinking of .45 acp just because i have lots for my 1911 colt

(see post 22)

Here is a link to one online calculation for checkin thrust. Not to overthink things just no point in wearing things out unnecessarily. If it shakes out to more just load them down. Best to confirm it is a real formula seems consistent with others out there, still free internet advice.. ;).

there was a Rossi take off barrel in .44 mag (hand loaded DOWN of course!!) in the EE not long ago. Maybe make a full length insert. I bet the breach diameter will still be thick enough to need turning down. Just a thought I've had before....

Of course you ought to stamp it to make it known to the 'next guy' 40 years later not to run factory loads (assuming those are too much...)

Just thinking out loud! Good luck

I would not consider the Snider action to be very strong and would be very cautious about putting a chamber liner in the gun. Also the firing pin in the gun is quite large in diameter and I would expect the primer to flow back around the pin and possibly into the hole the pin sits in. You could potentially get gas blow back through the firing pin hole. I have used chamber adaptors in several guns and with tight break actions and with falling blocks with no return spring on the firing pin, the guns can be difficult to open because the pin is stuck in the depression in the primer. You would probably be very wise to use only low pressure handloads in a Snider if you decide to use a liner in the gun

If the adapter would need machining anyways, would it be worth turning down the adapter base a little for the correct chamber length for .455 webley? Correct bore diameter, rimmed so an extractor designed to work in conjunction with the snider ejector would work, lower pressure so thrust wouldn't be as much of an issue? I know you're thinking 45acp because you've already got a ton, but maybe you shoot .455 too? Plus it's period correct! :p

never use smokeless in a snider its a dangerous game you want to try playing also if I were you id do a full length tube that way you don't get any gas cutting in the barrel(in a shotgun is a less common problem then a rifle) with the snider you have enough room to do a offset full length tube for .22lr

I shoot both .450/.455 black powder so that would be the best way to go should be a easy conversion to those
