.577 Snider

MT Chambers lists 2 diff. bullets for the .577 Snider, the diff. between the two is diameter, as Snider bores run large, and if the usual skirted bullet is asked to expand too much , it can loose pieces in the bore, choose your bullet wisely by using one that is as close to bore dia. as possible! There is another member of this site that is very knowledgeable on the Snider....DANTFORTH!!

Got access to a lathe? Go here for a how-to to make reloadable .577-450 brass out of 3/4" bar stock. It came out of an old Gun Digest Treasury. Needs Adobe Reader. lweb.net/tom/577-450.PDF

Snider Reloads

When it comes to Sniders things have certainly improved in the last little while. Now that Magtech makes boxer primed 24 gauge brass it is cheap $23 CDN for a box of 25 and they can be shaped to 25 gauge (Snider caliber) without trouble. Doug Rainer in Saskatchewan sell the Magtechs (306)689-2654. Though the down side is that NDFS in England is no longer in business. I got dies from them and they used to make turned brass a few years back they were not that expensive, the only draw back to turned brass it has to be annealled every bloody time you shoot them or you will have some of them crack. So for the money Magtech brass which is drawn is better, though not perfect, the thin brass makes for a large space inside and it has a much bigger powder capacity than the originals, and the rims are slightly undersized so some Snider extractors if worn can skip over them.

The brass is just the beginning. Figuring out the loads now that is a lifetime in itself.

most sniders have a bigger bore diameter, than you would think aswell. all mine shoot the best with a .590 bullet. there is a fellow in BC who sells a very very good mould for the snider, ill dig up his number if you like. Like the Incurable Collector said, thats the easy part. the fun begins with cardboard discs,lube cakes, and all that, to get them to shoot good
kerry jenkinson sells a very good mould for the snider.

You need to go to the "British Miltaria Forums" and read all you can about shooting the Snider.

I've fooled extensively with the Snider and tried all kinds of wierd and wonderful stuff (and posted there about it):

- using Fiocchi plastic shotgun hulls;
- using shot wads to act as a sabot with 54 cal bullets;
- a homemade 0.590" cast bullet mold and sizer;
- using the Lee 0.600" round ball; and
- using smokeless

Beware though - pretty uptight bunch over there. They cling tightly to a: "only blackpowder"; "only brass"; and "only expensive custom molds" dogma.

Sniders

Hey Andy,

I resemble that remark! I am on the British Militaria Forum and that is very much the way I think about Sniders, I would not put smokeless in them nor anything other than a brass cartridge at least not in the MKI and MKII models that have iron barrels and no safety latch for the action. However, not all on the forum have such progressive views, one of the wise old ones who has been shooting Sniders for a lifetime likes to use duplex loads and also tripple 7 as well.
The forum is a very good starting point for a new snider addict, you can than take your own path.

Oops - no offence intended :redface:

British Militaria is THE place to go for Snider info and advice. Those guys have forgotten more than I will ever know about the Snider

That having been said with all sincerity - they do need to be a bit more adventurous from time to time. :p

no worries

All's well, I take no offence. My intent is to shoot them safely but also as close as possible with the old components, but like I said I will not use the old rolled brass and paper cartridge. Though you are right, the Snider can accomodate all kinds of shooters.
