58 cal hunting reccomendations

I'm totally new to black powder hunting (did some shooting in the past). My father let slip that he's giving me a Cabellas .58 caliber Hawken style percussion for Christmas (a mint, unfired safe queen for 15 years). He's got the same rifle and hunts with 560 grain Maxhunters (I think that's what they're called) and 110 grs powder. Now, I know there are all sorts of fancy sabot rounds etc out there, but I want to stick with something more traditional, maybe not round balls, but if I've got a .58 then I surely want a .58 projectile. Can anyone suggest anything better than what my father is already using? I'll be hunting bears/caribou/moose with it. I've seen black bears shot almost completely end to end with a massive exit wound with this load, but I know my father hasn't looked into anything new for his .58 in like twenty years, so you guys may know something newer and better.
 
The reason your father hasn't looked at anything new in 20 years is because there is little to improve on a 560 grn bullet in front of 110 grns of powder. I doubt there is anything you will hunt that can't be killed with that load. If anything, I would load a little lighter for deer, less recoil. Those conicals can really kick. If you want to "improve" on blackpowder, go buy one of those ticky-tacky plastic super-duper laser beam rifles and have done with it.
 
Doesnt sound like theres much to improve on there. I have the TC. .58 Big Boar. 2" five round groups at 100 with round balls, the maxi hunters open up to about 4", all over 110 ffg. My gun likes black powder 110 grains, and flies aoh with pyrodex, guess its just to traditional enough. Stay with the try and true. Your gonna have a blast when the smoke clears.
