590A1 - Not an FTF, but a failure to stay assembled

Hey all,

I didn't have a camera to document the actual happenings, so I'll have to describe it. I picked up a 590A1 brand new 1 year ago and it perhaps has 300 target load and 30 slugs through it, as of this afternoon.

We had two clay launchers and were garbeurating the last of the shells and clays (dubbed the 'Lightning Round'). I had loaded up 8 and was having a grand old time when clank. The entire trigger assembly fell out in my hand! After calling a cold range, the bolt slide and action slide bars (if I'm looking at the schematics correctly for the right terminology) fell out of the gaping hole in the underside where the trigger assembly used to be. The bolt held a live round from the last rack, so I removed that and much cussing ensued. Near as I can tell, nothing was broken or bent.

Two of the three pins that run into the receiver were gone. We found one in the dirt but the other is a goner. We happened to have a magnet handy and just could not find the second (perhaps it had slid out earlier in the day). I know that everything was intact when we started the day and near as I can tell, the two pins fell out first then the trigger assembly fell out in my hand on the backside of racking a fresh round into the chamber.

To say the least, I was surprised and more than a little PO'd. This shotgun should not be falling apart under moderate use. Secondly, I had lubed the bolt a little, just to be smooth enough, but I would never suspect it would be enough to allow the pins to slip loose. And, how would they (both of them ffs) slide their little asses out the receiver anyways.

Has anyone else ever seen anything like this?? Maybe I'm not seeing the problem here, and would appreciate all your input. Maybe this is a maintenance issue that I didn't know about.

Thanks all.

I have had my mossburg pins move a bit, i just kept everything on check, 2000+ rounds in a year no problem. If im thinking correctly, ive only got one pin through the trigger group into reciever, the mag release finger has a pin to pivot on but its all one solid steel piece, the other is the lifter that has pivot pins into the reciever, so im not sure how u lost more then 1 pin unless the trigger group came apart?

on my 10/22, the vibrations caused my takedown screw to come from firmly tightened, to the reciever rattling loose in the stock when firing, all within a 2 hour shooting session. had cleaned and reassembled the gun before leaving the house. even tourqued the takedown bolt to factory specs. I would suggest the missing trigger group pins were rattled loose. light field loads - 7.5 or 8 - are one thing. but when you start shooting slugs and/or buckshot, the amount of recoil and consequently vibration increase considerably. I just bought a M590A1 so I will be looking for the same problem. so far its been a mixed bag of 60 or so 00 buckshot and slugs and about a hundred target loads. so far so good.
