Hey.

So a few years ago I picked up a Remington 597, all excited to go to the range and play, and well it was a MONSTER let down. Must have been an 80% failure to fire rate, and that is if the rounds chambered at all. Then I found myself having to pry her tounds out of the chamber with a blade.

I took it home and pulled it apart to make sure it was clean. It was. It failed for me. Buuuut instead of sending it back for warranty, I took the whole thing apart to try and resolve the problems myself. So now after a few years I'm starting to put it back together and am looking for a VQ extractor. Anywhere in Canada I can reliably buy one?

Cheers!

Did u make sure the two rear tightening screws for the action rails are torqued proper? This was the main culprit in my 597.
Make sure the screws are not tight, they should be just flush with the back plate.

Hey.

I haven't put it back together yet. Just starting. I'm polishing and de-burning everything as I go and don't want to take it apart again to put in the VQ Extractor when I find one later... but yes I am aware of the guide rods. If the screws are too tight the actually warp the rods and cause binding. If someone made some aftermarket, say... tool steel guides instead I almost guarantee the whole guiderod issue would be fixed... lol

Yeah I would buy aftermarket guide rods if they were reasonably priced.
I also had feed and ejection problems with the 25 round mags when they were tweaked by holding them or resting on them. The 10 round original worked best.
I'm sure if it wasn't a weekend there would be more helpful information, it sounds like you are doing the right things to troubleshoot the problem though.

The extractor is a great addition to the rifle. I got mine from Midway/ or Brownells. I think Mil-arm in Edmonton might have some VQ parts. Mine is a Yellowjacket model and shoots great with most ammo. Mini mags in the gopher patch by the thousand, that was when the extractor failed so I went VQ. Sucks having a gun down waiting for parts! Lucky for me I hade a second gun to go to. Good luck, I really like my 597.
