Theres a 597 on ee right now. .I have a friend who put some stiffer rail springs in his and hasent had a blowout since . just wondering on others thoughts. would u purchase said rifle and try to fix it 450 is pretty cheap for a semi auto 17 hmr the only other manufacturer is volquartsen.

Yup but i guess some guys held on to them . the 597 wmr has had some of the same issues the hmr did . The round not being completely chambered and blowing out the mag and possibly your hand . just wondering if reaming the chamber and changeing some parts could make it safer .

As far as I can tell, the only .17 hmr semi that was not recalled was the volquartsen. I don't think I would spend my money on a semi that needs fixing, even at less than 1/2 the price. I know that it would be extremely fun, but I don't think it would be the smartest thing to do.

Weren't they deamed unsafe and all recalled

They were deemed to be a liability by the corporate lawyers.

My reading puts the problem as being the time-pressure spike of the .17 cal rimfire rounds being a lot more violent than the .22 cal versions. According to the general feelings of the guys that were building .22 WMR, and 17HMR and .17M2 conversions of 10-22's, a stiffer spring and some added mass to the bolt were pretty much what it took to prevent most of the issues with blowouts, and a pair of safety glasses for the times when it blew out anyways. And keep bystanders away from the ejection port.

I'm really surprised that Remington did not offer a bolt action from their product line rather than a payout. Or was it just a coupon towards remington products?

I really question the logic of all the guys that sent their perfectly good ammo in for $5 a box.

I can see lots of guys being willing to shrug and carry on, if they wanted a .17HMR Semi-auto.

I wonder if the return numbers are available, to see how many held on to theirs.

Cheers

My Thoughts exactly :D I was reading on another forum some of the problems may also have been because of poor cleaning. A rimfire being a dirty round and the casing being necked down to .17 the shoulder would carbon up after a while and the round would not sit in the chamber properly. Causing a blow out

Especially in the sue-happy US of lawyered-up A !

Look at the litigation that is being lined up against Toyota over the recall for the gas pedal. Folks suing because they feel they were put at risk, not because they suffered any loss.

It killed the light plane industry in the US for years. I'm surprised that the gun industry has held up as well as it has.
